My engine is out until this spring in my Mustang (valve spring had a date with a piston). Do you have any product/technique to remove the 21 years worth of grime and dirt that accumulated on the inner fenders, firewall, k-member, etc that is safe for the wiring that are still there?

Thanks,
Maxime

Kinda off topic but one way I've found to protect the electrical parts in the engine bay is to use those cheapo shower caps that hotels give out. the edges are elastic so they can stretch around parts. As far as your engine grime maybe just letting some citrus degreaser sit for a few min before agitation. May need multiple rounds? Only thing stronger would be a steam cleaner maybe?

Haha good idea on the shower caps!

Yeah might take a few times. Grime ain't that bad, car's nearly never seen rain. But you know what 20 years is.

Without knowing too clearly how bad your engine bay is, safest route would be to dilute your favorite APC well (10:1 to start perhaps) and start off weak. Always better to do it slow and safe, than go strong from the start and cause damage. Snap a pic if you can.

Yep I have one here. Grim ain't that BAD, I think cleaning and sorting/hiding wires and vaccuum lines will be the hard part haha!

Should be easy. Might as well remobe the battery. Use plastic wrap and painters tape to seal off the stuff you don't want water in. Lots of cleaner choices. Simple green is an option as well. APC is another good option. Depends on what you already have. Should come out great with all tyhat room to work in there.

Yep, original paint '92 hatch.

Thanks for the product suggestion! Yes, there's quite a bit of room there too work, I could close the hood and still have room haha!

Seal off all your plugs, vacuum, fuel line ends with duct tape and/or plastic bag.
Spray down everything with WD40. Especially that crossmember. Let it sit for a day or so and spray it down again. Let sit.
Follow that with Zep 505 or Zep citrus. Don't mess around with spray bottles. Get a gallon and pick up a small cheap pump garden sprayer with a hose.
Pressure wash or hose it off with jet nozzle. Don't spray directly at vital areas.
You may have to go after that crossmember with a putty knife. Use a plastic one if you don't want to scratch up the paint.

Good cleaning suggestions by the forum members.

It would be a good idea to move the vehicle off the grassy area ASAP.
The entire vehicle is now being subjected to an open invitation
to unnecessary and unwanted: Corrosion and Critters.

Nice I have a 92 vert with original paint as well. I really want to get the engine bay cleaned as well and have all the wires tucked away but it is a very long process and not much time for me to do it.

Thanks for the awesome tips everybody! Can't wait to start, three weeks left before I can take her out..!

Haha there's no grass to be seen here, we're still under a foot of snow! Darn New Brunswick.

The car is an heated garage for the winter. I took the shot this autumn before rolling her in hibernation. Sadded moment of the year :(

Yeah, wire tucking and holes filling is quite a job! I won't go on a whole tuck, I mostly wants to get rid of some unused vacuum lines (no more EGR, smog pump, etc). Battery might ends up in the trunk too.

Thanks for the link!
