Re: Up selling tricks

For me, there are 4 items I do not put in my packages nor talk about on the phone. When I get there and do the run around the car to the customer I suggest those services:

1. Aquapel for the windshield. This is the easiest for me to upsell. I charge 25$ for it, cost about 6$ in bulk purchase and takes about 15 minutes to do.

2. Headlight restoration. This is obvious if the car needs it. 40$ for it, takes about an hour to do. Cost is about 5$ I would say for the sand paper disks, compound, polish, coating.

3. Tire coating. I charge 20$ for it, not sure for exact product cost, a bottle goes a long way. Probably something like 2-3 dollars and it takes about the same time to do as the normal tire dressing that is part of my packages.

4. Trim restoration. Again 20$ to do, takes about 30 mins or less depending on the amount of trim. Product cost probably 2-3$ too.

I know some detailer upset the sealant vs the wax. Maybe I should to do that but I put a sealant in all my packages because frankly it's a better product and it takes less time to do than a wax. Of course the price of the product is higher but what ever ;)

Re: Up selling tricks

The OP used the word tricks because that's what he meant. Who in the hell uses that word referring to customers unless his intent is screwing them? His thinking was backed up by polishing one panel of his customer's car without asking (the trick).

If some Bozo detailer polished/buffed just one panel on my car making it look like a Mike Phillips test panel, I'd make him the whole car for free. Right there, right then. I wouldn't have to say a word, either. I open carry every day and it sure as hell ain't styrofoam.

Can't wait for the OP's other tricks like a can of Rustoleum Instant Overspray.

If you have to think of using tricks to increase your sales, it means you're not very good at what you do. If you're not good at your craft, you have no business charging money for it.

Re: Up selling tricks

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and responses.

Just to clarify, I am new to the business after all.

My intention is never to screw the customers by any means. Matter of fact, the perspective on the original title is based on what I just stated.

Clearly my choice of words are not great.

Either way, my point being is that, I am just trying to get people's thoughts whether positive experiences or negative. Therefore, I make sound judgement of decisions after.

Of course I would never do anything to jeopardize my new business.

After all, isn't the whole point of this forum is to support each other in the one actual thing with all have in common?!

You are going to make someone polish your car, at gun point?

Riiight....

E-thuggery at its finest.

When I read through your total posting history it's simply more of the same hostile and demeaning attitude towards our forum members.

People join forums for typically one of three reasons...

1. To ask questions and get help.

2. To answer questions and help others.

3. To cause problems.

Here's the link to our forum rules,

Forum Rules

Here's the rules your broke....

3. You are welcome to disagree but you must be polite.

4. No bashing any company or their products. No bashing other people. If you can't say anything nice about someone, then don't say anything at all, this also includes talking to others in a demeaning manner.

12. Continuously breaking the rules to disrupt the online community will result in you being banned from the forum.

15. No personal attacks toward members or non-members will be tolerated.

After discussing your posts to our forum with management it was decided that you joined this forum for reason 3 I listed above.

3. To cause problems.

Now under your name it correctly states,

SELF BANNED

We don't want and we don't need people acting like you on this forum.

Re: Up selling tricks

Thank you Mike! I never meant for this to turn into an uproar.

Thanks again everyone else who didn't take this thread the wrong way.

I gathered all the information I was hoping for.

Tran out!

Re: Up selling tricks

Speaking of upselling, listen to this one. I took my car to the local car wash and I told the cute girl who was taking orders to just do the basic wash. She asked if I wanted the wheels done too for an extra $2!!! I wondered out loud if the next step would be to charge for each part of the car they'd wash. If the front of the car had bugs on it, charge extra for that too.

Re: Up selling tricks

Just to chime in...

I changed the title to this thread from Up selling tricks to

Upselling techniques

I'm confident that's exactly what Dan meant and it's a GREAT questions. If you have upselling techniques to share the please post them.

If you don't or you only have something off-topic to post then do me a personal favor and simply refrain from posting.

Like I said, Dan asks a great question so lets keep this thread on topic. Sonic Mustang revealed his true character and nefarious reasons for being on this forum with his post that was for the sole purpose of causing strife. So disregard his post as a waste of perfectly good pixels on your screen.

Thanks everone...

Dan, you just moved not that far up the road from me. You stated you were new to the area and just getting your feet back on the ground.
Feel free to PM me and I'm more than glad to get together for cars&coffee talk to discuss business and go over some ideas for your business.

I have had two great detailers (one on this forum - Mediscott) help personally give me a jump start and likewise I can pass it on.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I'm always open for a coffee and discussion.

My advice would be not to use car washes... but that's just me. Funny thing is, I wonder what they do for 2$. Heck, it takes me between 10 and 15 minutes to do a single wheel so if they can do all 4 for 2$ they probably just spray some degreaser on it and then pressure wash it out. This should be part of their basic package.

I don't really think of any service I offer as an up-sell; rather, I offer a wide range of services to fit each vehicle's, and each owner's, specific needs.

People use their cars differently. Also, people have different concerns about how their car looks and what is specifically important to them. During the initial walk around I'm typically having a conversation with the client about why they are having the car detailed. I ask questions like: "Why are you getting this vehicle detailed? When did you buy it? How long are you planning to keep it? What is your main concern? How do you normally wash it and how often? How often do you clay or polish the paint? Do you have any questions about the specific detail package you selected?"

In speaking with the client I can get an idea of what is important to them and if I learn about something that isn't included in the package they booked I'll point it out and offer a solution that suits their specific needs. If, during our walk-around conversation I determine that they would be a good fit for an additional service, I'll let them know. I'm never trying to "sell" anything to anyone. I'm just teaching them about cool stuff that I offer that just happens to be exactly what they want and what the vehicle needs. It might not be in the budget but at least they'll know about it for next time. Also, having a thorough walk-around conversation with the client really helps to set appropriate expectations so that I can try to exceed them on each service.
