Help me out AG, I was contacted by a used car lot that is starting at the corner of my street. I live and do my work a block from it. I'm meeting with the owner this week. How about some tips to present my case on why he should go with me. Thanks.

I don't detail for a living so I can't speak to the detailing side of this. I have been employed my whole adult life and had only three jobs. My interviewing skills are weak at

best. The bottom line is one of the biggest things people want to know (other than your skill set) is that your honest and hard working. I end my interviews with " At the end of

the day I have to look myself in the mirror and be proud of the man that's looking back." Maybe that's corny but I actually do evaluate myself while brushing my teeth before bed.

Being in the car business, I much prefer to have the detail done right. Selling a clean car is much easier than a dirty car. Don't get caught up in paint correction because people (him and his customers) don't look for that. The interior is very important and when working on the exterior remove any noticeable defects (scratches, paint transfer, etc).

Sell him on you and why you are the best for him. Find out what he is looking to have you do and then help Tailor a package to make it fit. Don't worry about being the cheapest guy, sell him on you and the end return, him selling the car easier and faster.
 
Communication is everything. Understanding what he/she expects is most of the battle. I would walk the lot to see the general condition of the inventory. Are all the cars/trucks 5 to 8 years old with 100k? Repos? Trade-ins? Auction buys? Could be great money or a great hassle. Worth the risk? I would say so. Dealing with a car lot means that your never closed. You have to be willing to do last minute jobs at awkward times. To me wholesale jobs are easier than retail, not as picky.
 
Good luck. I never hear anything good about dealers so I don't bother. I got a call from a guy who owned a small lot(apperently I did his sister's car) he wanted me to do a few cars a week on his lot. I would rather do retail.
 
Small dealers usually wanna chop your legs out from under you. They want to pay $20 and get a $200 job. Just be careful for yourself knowing that. :xyxthumbs:
 
Be prepared to get cars done as fast as possible.
 
Def be prepared to do cars fast and not to the perfection you would prefer. Go at him with a few prices: basic wash, interior clean/vacuum and dress; wash and wax, interior clean/vacuum and dress and full then full detail; wash, polish, wax, clean and vacuum interior l and dress everything. Be prepared to do cheap work because that's all he'll wan to pay you for. Dealerships don't really care, just so long as the car is clean and the tires and interior shine.
 
I clean vehicles for 2 dealerships. They want a lot for a little so stand your ground. Id grab slip grip plastic floor mats and dispenser mask-a-tak and paper floor mats to go over top of everything. Might be different where you are but here they always request it in used vehicles. I would go in there with before and after pictures as well and solid pricing on your services.
 
one other thing other people are saying. dealerships want cars back fast so they are always there for customers to see. One way i battled this was taking them after hours and bringing them back afterhours. That way they are there in the morning when the shop opens and everyone is happy. that will only work ofcourse if you dont mind working at night. I usually do it after my kids go to bed

They want $500 wine for the price of a Budweiser and they will nit pick everything on that car that sits on a pot lot that someone needs special financing to buy anyways.
