Hello, Everyone.

I've bought the 7424 about 3months ago. And I've used Pinnacle XMT Light Swirl Remover Kit on my 2001 Lincoln Town Car 3months ago. The Car Color is a Tricoat Ivory Parchment. So Swirls in the paint during daylight are non existant. Cuts are very hard to see. But During the night, the swirls on the hood and roof become apparent.

I did not use #4 Heavy Duty Swirl Remover, I used #3 than #1 than Glaze, Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Wax. With another Coat of Souveran Wax. It's a nice smooth surface, and looks suprisingly more glossy than it looked before I started whole process and has retained that glossy quality. But When I take it out at night it reminds me of a job that could've been done better.

I'm looking for suggestions that get scratches that do not hit the paint but, a #3 Pinnacle Polishing didn't fix.

Suggestions like what Pads, (I've got #4 Pinnacle Heavy Duty and I've heard using same products sequentially gives a better finish instead of mix-n-matching)?

Also When I start this project, what product should I use to strip off the wax so I can really fill in and perfect my cars paint to a gorgeous pearl-like showroom appearance.

Silly question, But does Wax and Tar Remover from Rustoleum completely strip the clearcoat from a car aswell as waxes and tar?

Maybe some links to proper technique videos, So I can review how to do it right. Any suggestions people. I'm 18, and I'm here to learn "What's good" and "How-to" properly, so I won't waste another 3 days and still have some swirls.
Thanks.

Others will shortly be able to handle your questions as I would rather someone with more experience be able to go more in-depth for you. However, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to the forum! Sorry for the irrelevant post, it was not my intention to falsely give you the impression someone was answering your concern, just wanted to be friendly!

About the wax and tar remover, it will remove tax and will more then likely remove wax or any sort of lsp (last step product) due to its deep cleaning and harshness, should not remove clear coat unless you are doing something totally and incredibly wrong.

Could we perhaps get a picture of the scratches?

And just because the scratches do not go past the clear doesn't mean you can always remove them with a compound/polish.

My educated guess on your problem is that you did not use an aggressive enough product. I have not used the products you used, but if you are practicing slow arm speed with a decent amount of pressure and still are not removing the scratches... Then you need a more aggressive product/pad. And if that does not remove the scratches they are likely just to deep to remove without wet sanding. And I would never recommend you take on something like that.

My suggestion is to try an orange pad, and your #4 heavy swirl remover. Then wipe the test spot with IPA and see if the swirls are still there.

Your using the XMT line of polishes right? I have heard the only one that cuts well at all is #4. I would try a more agressive combination to see if that helps. I would read/watch Mikes how to videos and articles.

XMT #4 is a very aggressive, cutting compound that will remove about anything that can be removed, you need to be careful as it is a true abrasive compound.

IF XMT #4 can't remove the defects it's probably time for a paint job...

It will leave it's own swirls in the paint so you'll have to remove these probably with the #3 and then finish out with the #1

:)

Before we start jumping into using compounds, can we review your technique with the process you used? What pads did you use with the #3 and #1, how much pressure, how many passes, how big an area, etc. Just because you ran the polisher over the car doesn't necessarily mean you did any work (I'm not trying to be perjorative, just trying to help).

Ohh. No Problem.
My Technique went as follows:

Take Clean Orange Pad from XMT Light Swirl Kit W/ #3 Swirl. condition pad. Slap with hand to see how moist it is. Put 6-8 Dots of polish on Pad. Mark out an area with painters tape. Tamp the Polishers pad on marked out area just to get dots all over area to be polished. Do a quick cursory swipes to get polish spread out. Crosshatch with porter cable at 6, maybe 12 pounds of force, until the polish starts to flash which takes about 5-6 passes. Wipe clean with Cobra Microfiber Towels.

I'm a very tedious person, so time is not an issue. I do not rush, and I'm certianly willing to put in 2-3 days to get it right. And I had that mentality when I started the Town Car the first time.

I will look back over Mikes Video, That was sent with XMT. Make sure I get the Technique perfect on a test spot.

Sadly my Phone is a model about 10 Years old. No Camera. And also my my Dad has my Camera. Being a student allows only a little bit of pleasure spending. :o

And When I use #4 Heavy Swirl, Should I use an Orange or Yellow pad?

Try increasing your force to 20 pounds, and slow your arm speed down a little further.

Also It just hit me that if you are using a kit you are probably using a 6" pad. I find that the PCXP and 6" do not mix. You may want to try a 5.5" pad. Not only will it correct better because of its smaller size, but your PCXP will be able to handle it better resulting in more power.

And if you try #4, use the orange pad.

If you haven't already, place a mark on the back of your backing plates so you can easily tell if the pad is rotating or not, the pad needs to be rotating in order to effectively remove paint, which is how you remove swirls and scratches.

Like this you see on the backing plate on the left...

Most Important...

Here's how to do a "Section Pass" when trying to remove swirls, scratches and other below surface paint defects.

I just looked on Autogeek.net and the XMT Light Swirl Remover Kit does come with 6.5" pads.

The PC can keep these pads rotating but you do need to be sure to hold the face of the pad very flat to the surface. If you hold the polisher so that more pressure is placed on just one edge of the face of the pad this will reduce pad rotation and you won't remove the swirl marks.

Clean your pad often using the technique I show here,

If you decide to try the XMT #4 do a test spot first and when you do this test, follow it with the #3 and then the #1 and make sure you're able to get the paint to look the way you want before going over the entire car.
