In page 70 of Mike P's detailing book he says he recommends to stay with one line of products regarding compound & polish due to SYNERGISTIC effect between the chemicals/ingredients. Your thoughts?

I see plenty of people mix & match all the time but what he says does make since. Are those people potentially missing out on a better finish by mixing & matching?

I was actually planning on getting Menzerna FG400 for my compound & Meg's D205 for my polish.... but if what Mike says really is true, I may stick with just Menzerna or stick with just Meg's then.

i follow what Mike says in his book. i have 4 different brands i use and don't mix and match between them.

Good question. I try to stick to using brands together. IE M105/M205 or FG400 with IP2000 or PF2500. I did just use IP2000 and Turbowax final polish on a single stage Mercedes this week with great results. Main reason I used the turbowax is I didn't have any SF4000. Would the final result been different with the SF4000? Not sure but I got the result I was after.

I believe in this and I believe Mike knows his stuff.

However, I do believe sometimes (a lot of times) it may not be critical to mix and match products - depending on what you are doing.

This is another example of where more knowledge/education regarding what you are doing will aid you greatly.

For example, would I use P21S Paint Cleaner with a Dodo Juice wax? Yes!

Would I use PB's Black Hole with BFWD? Yes!

Can you mix and match compounds and polishes? You can, but it becomes more murky. Using a system approach like the Wolfgang or Optimum trio just seems to make more sense. That is why I love the Rupes system. Its easy and I know what to buy/use without thinking about it.

I believe this becomes hyper critical with coatings. I've had great success with DLux and OptiCoat using their products as prep as directed. I've also had failure with OC using other products.

I have mixed product lines on compounds and polish and even AIO's. I recently did a TBSS with M105 and polished it out with HD polish. I have mixed DG501 and D151 on pad for a killer AIO with good protection.

I let the paint tell me what it wants. If I do a test spot with HD Cut and M105 works better then I stick with M105, when it's time polish if I do a test spot with M205 but HD polish looks better I stick with HD polish.

My thoughts?

You're questioning Mike's integrity?
You're kidding...correct?!?!

Haha that's the thought process that went through my head when I saw that it's common for guys to use a compound from one line and a polish from another. Why?

I was originally going to get M105/M205 but guys suggested to use M105/FG400 instead and as I was reading Mikes book he had a section over mixing products that goes completely against that.

What gives ??

I use all meguiar's when I do my own cars. I am a believer in what Mike says about staying within a system.

M101 seems to be the next big thing instead of going with M105.

I mix it up all the time. I used the product that will achieve the best result, for example....I might use Scholls concepts (i usually use scholls concepts) for cutting and polishing, but for refining I use Nanotech because everytime it products better results than S40.

Or depending might go from Scholls to Megs to Nanotech.

I can understand why its promoted to use the same brand, it makes it soo much easier for the user, but does it really. Is it more an "dummies guide to paint correction", "use the blue cap compound with the blue pad etc...."

Cars paintwork respond differently to different compounds at different stages, be adventurous! mix it up and just maybe you might find it easier, or even better, achieve greater results.

^ with prism. I mix it up a lot too. A one two combo I've used frequently is M101 cutting and finishing with HD polish and seal with bfwdafpp.

Nothing wrong with the system approach either though.
