Vector polisher

Hello all,

I have a brand new Vector polisher that was a gift a long time ago. I wanted to start getting more experence on rotary polishers so i figured since i have one i might as well use it. I dont know a whole lot on it but from what i see on the internet it's got good power. I need to find cushioned backing plate for it. The plate it comes with is for sanding and not what im looking for. It can take a 7 inch plate from what i can see.

this site Vector Professional Circular Polisher seems to have a backing plate but if i can order something through AG i rather.

As long as your Vector has a standard, 5/8" threaded spindle, you can use any of the U.S. backing plates we offer at We Are Car Care -- Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detailing Supplies, Car Buffers & Car Accessories Store

I like the cushioned backing plates for most work, if you're starting out with a rotary buffer, smaller pads are easier to control and learn with and thus a smaller backing plate is needed.

Here's a small cushioned backing plate and then also the Meguiar's Solo, which can be used with larger pads.

when you have a 6inch backing plate you need same size pads correct?

I have this on my Flex PE14-2-150 Rotary Polisher and all I can tell you is this is one nice backing plate! The foam core is firm yet flexible enough to conform to those less than flat areas..
 
are the lake country pads the recomended pads to use?

Lake Country pads are used by many folks and have earned a decent reputation. I use them exclusively and have never had an issue or failure.

I've used several of their variations and for the most part have settled on the Flat Pads for my dual action machines and the Kompressor series on my rotaries.

Yes.

The Meguiar's pads work well but I like the additional choices in foam density offered by Lake Country over those offered by Meguiar's.

Do the Meguiar's pads work? Yes, and many like and use them. I have them in my cabinet as well but prefer the pads available through Lake Country.
 
ok, this is my order. going with the Flex 5inch backing plate and thinking about the orange, white and black pads to start. sound good?
 
To the OP, I have the Vector polisher. I call it "The Beast".

The first true polisher I ever had, bought it for $50 new on special at a local paint and body shop with a Meguiar's pro backing plate and some foam pads. Learned on it. Used it until, well, I started the business a few years ago. Until then I used the rotary only.

The thing is heavy, but works great. Noisy as well, but adequate. Its size and weight are its limiting factor, but I never noticed until I grabbed a Makita and a Flex Lightweight. But it never fails! We carry it in our bag as a back up polisher since Makitas are known to break cables easily.

Oh and it does use the standard thread size of any rotary backing plate here.

So just wanted to provide some specific assurance about the polisher ;)

I just created a thread on flexible backing plates, I would recommend one of these or both as you feel like building on your arsenal of tools.

Flexible Backing Plates


Flexible Backing Plates provide,
  • An extra level of cushion when using a rotary buffer which helps you when buffing on curved panel and over body lines.
  • The flexible foam interface heps to distribute pressure more evenly over the face of the buffing pad.
  • They can also make the buffing process less aggressive as compared to using a stiff backing plate which can help to reduce swirls.

Currently we have two flexible backing plates besides the flexible backing plate in the 1-Pad system, which is specific to the 1-Pad buffing pads.

  1. The Flex-Foam Heavy Duty Rotary Backing Plate, which has a 5" Diameter
  2. The Meguiar's Easy-Buff Solo Backing Plate, which has a 6" Diameter

Below are some pictures to show the size of the backing plates relative to some popular buffing pads to help you get an idea of the fitment of the backing plate to the hook-n-loop interface on the back of the buffing pads.

Note in this picture and all the above pictures the extra backing and or foam that sticks out past the outer edge of the backing plate. You want this extra material as a safety margin to help prevent running the outer edge of the backing plate into any painted areas, or around trim or other components like side view mirrors, rear wing spoilers, etc.

Both of these flexible backing plates are excellent backing plates to have in your tool chest to go along with your rotary buffer.

Isn't another word for Vector a Rat?

They should've rethought this name brand IMO
