I renewed my vehicle registration for the FJ today. I got to wondering what we all get charged for our vehicle registrations, just curiosity.

In my state, New South Wales, Australia, it costs me $556 to the state government, and $289.03 for the "green slip", which is for 3rd party insurance to cover personal injury to others if I'm at fault in an accident. This insurance is compulsory, and you can't pay your renewal if the green slip isn't paid already. There's also the vehicle inspection, which is mandatory for vehicles over 5 years old, this costs $43, and the FJ passed easily, which I hope all our vehicles would. So the grand total is $888.03.

As a side note, old age pensioners get free registration in NSW, so my mum only has to pay the green slip and vehicle inspection costs to register her Qashqai, which is cool.

Varies per state in the US. Here in Pennsylvania a passenger vehicle pays $39/year for registration. Annual inspections can vary a little but I’d say ranges from $50 to $80. Insurance is all over the place so better not give any figures there.

Wow, so much cheaper, maybe that's why we have much better roads over here. Oh wait, no we don't.

I live in Ohio and have personalized plates(always) and I renew for two-year intervals, runs me around $280 I think the last time I got plates. Will be due this November, I think. I suspect like everything else prices have gone up.

Right now I pay $151 for a passenger vehicle. Quite surprising considering how much Illinois loves to tax it's citizens. They get their pound of flesh elsewhere. Inspections vary by where you live in the state. Some have it, some don't. In my area, you only have to do it every three years and only on cars 5 years and older. Fortunately it's free and only amounts to an OBDII scan.

Agree on insurance, in the US the variables are nearly endless depending on the company and where you live. I remember long ago having a friend who lived in an apartment complex across the street from mine and he paid nearly 25% more for insurance than I did (same company). The difference? The street was a dividing line between two municipalities and he was in the one with the higher crime rate.

In Colorado there’s a sliding scale depending on what the MSRP was and how old the vehicle is. So new & expensive cars are all of the $$$$. And my several year old cars are around $150.

That $ is used to keep the city & state parks and open spaces maintained. I hate giving gov any credit but by-and-large all those areas are pretty well kept

Just got done renewing. $92 for my truck. 2 years is $184 no savings.

$65 each to renew our cars per year. No inspections. I wish there were as we have older cars spewing smoke out the back and many vehicles with really loud (backfiring) exhausts.

We have a pair of 19 year olds (boy and girl) driving on our insurance so it is expensive.

30 bucks for pa inspection, no emissions needed in my county.

Vehicle insurance is actually pretty fare priced now, but only after we kicked state farm to the curb years ago.

At times I miss the safety and smog inspections I've seen in other states/countries. I frequently see vehicles on the road which can't be safe. They are spewing smoke, body panels held on with rope/duct tape, suspension collapsed on one or more corners. They are a danger to the driver and anyone around them. The vehicle doesn't need to be ready to take on track duty, but should be able to safely turn, stop, and not shed large pieces of sheet metal as it goes down the road.

Both cars at home have personalized plates. They cost extra to get but that's the only time you pay more, after that it's the same. There are, however, some clubs or non profit orgs that have custom plates and those have an annual cost to them. If it's the regular PA plate that is customized, you just pay once to get it. Used to be very cheap, $20 when I got mine. But currently it's $79 to get one and they said they might make it $129 fairly soon.

In Minnesota you pay 1.25% of the msrp price.
It goes down 10% of the msrp every year for 10 years.

So if you buy brand new, a year later you would pay 90% of the msrp. Year two would be 80% of msrp and so on.

So if you bought a brand new car for $50,000, 1.25% of that is $625.

The second year you would pay 90% of msrp.
So 90% of $50,000 is $45,000 and you would pay 1.25% on that which is $562 and so on for ten years in which I think it's $46 after ten years.

My 2015 bmw is 7 years old so I will be paying 1.25% @ 70% less of the msrp.

So I will be paying 1.25% of $13,800 which is about $172

That is absoultly absurd.

Somebody, somewhere, sitting at a desk with a spreadsheet open, thought it was a good idea. Then they convinced other people it was as well.

I know in Michigan it is similar....it's waaaaayy too much

In my area of Alaska it is $100 registration fee plus a tax that tops out at $150 for a new car/pickup/RV and drops $10 each year up to a 2016, then in most locations you are eligible for a forever plate with no more fees

That is for 2 years by the way and as far as I know there are no locations in Alaska that have mandatory inspections, although like a lot of you I wish they would

We have more than our fair share of beaters that shouldn't be on the road

As far as insurance, it is required but all you have to do is check a box that you have it, you don't have to prove you do just to get your tags

New York rates vary widely, but I pay $76 for a two year registration.

Annual NYS inspection is $37.

So for one year, I pay 75 bucks. New York isn't really bad on it's rates, and there are no toll roads on Long Island.

(But God help you if you try and leave the Island via NYC........ Lol)

Ontario Canada was $120 per year till last year when it changed to zero. It was a move by the government in power to buy votes for re-election. So currently we don’t pay for our vehicle registration. We do have to renew at no cost.

$$$$$$HHhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TTTTTTTTT……….

I pay about $400 a year. Suppose to be $30 but we gotta pay for bridges and tunnels I never use.

I got collectors plates on the chevelle and it was like a 2k 1 time fee…..

I don't feel as bad now that someone else is paying excessive amounts for things they're not using.

I paid extra for my plates, a one off fee of about $300. They call them "styled" rather than personalised, because I chose the colour but not the content. I went black with silver writing, to suit the black bumpers on a silver car. We can even choose US sized plates to fit US built cars. There's even a specific Mustang plate.
