As the above poster stated a coating is just as likely to be damaged as your clear coat. The difference is that it takes the brunt of the damage.
Think of it like this, this is how I explain it to my clients . A coating is like a screen protector, it goes over your clear coat(screen) and it protects it's current state (clean,dirty,scrarched) it will lock in that state until it wears off over time. The coating(screen protector) still needs to be cleaned regularly and still gets scratched and dinged BUT it takes the majority of the abuse. The coating like the screen protector can only do so much so things can still get through and damage what's underneath
