Wax or Coating

Hi,
I have 2002 Jeep Wrangler that I bought from my brother in law a couple of years ago, he never had the top on and only drove it on sunny days on the weekends, it only had 39,000 miles on the clock and is was in almost new condition. Well! Since I bought it I leave it up at our cabin in northern Michigan where I can go off roading for as long as I wish. :) I don't drive it in the winter and would really like to keep it looking nice. When I bought it I did a quick polish and wax job on it and noticed that it was less likely to pickup surface scratches from small branches rubbing along the sides of the Jeep, I'm guessing because of the slick surface. I was all set to put a Gtechniq coating system on it but now I'm having seconds thoughts, not sure if I should just put a coat of wax on it spring and fall and call it good? The last time we went out we hit some trails that hadn't been used in what looked like years and my poor Jeep's clearcoat took quite a beating from all the branches. Would the finish on today's coatings "Gtechniq" be somewhat more scratch resistant than wax or are they basically just longer lasting?

I am pretty sure a coating won't protect you from trail rash. Just wax it and be careful if you don't want to trash it.
 
I agree with hogie. With a coating, if you decide to correct any trail rash, you'd have to polish through the coating. If you use wax, a strip wash will be all that is needed.
 
That's kinda what I was thinking too guys. Thanks.. :) Wash, quick polish to clean up any light scratches, and some paste carnauba wax call it a day.. After all it is a Jeep:
Just Empty Every Pocket! LOL
 
I tend to look at this differently. The branch scratchess are either going to end up in the clear coat, or the coating, if they are shallow. The coating can be repaired, or polished off and redone. The clear will eventually, if enough removal takes place will have to be resprayed. I think I would instead consider some PPF in the areas of concern. Xpel self healing would be on the top of my list when taking a vehicle where I know it is going to have contact with elements that may scratch the surface.
 
Trail rash is gonna be deeper than a coating is thick. Either that are you aren't really off-roading.

most of the scratches I had on my last Toyota went down to primer or seriously deep in the clear.
 
90% of the scratches I'm getting are light scratches just in the clear coat, there are a couple that went beyond the clear coat. I may try a coating this spring and see how it does. Thanks for the replies guys..
