I try to wax my car every week and I just learned not to cake the wax onto the paint, as the excessive rubbing will actually do more harm than good - but I still end up with the same problem.

My problem is: no matter what, I always leave a little bit of wax on my car. It's never the same spots. A few days after I wax there are little white patches on the paint surface where I didn't buff it out completely.

Any ideas on how to keep track of wax application/removal?

When you apply a thin layer, it can be even more difficult.

What I do is I use a high intensity flash light something like the Brinkmann and inspect.

I've also had problems with caking on wax as depending on the lighting, it can be difficult to see. Using a DA to apply wax has solved my problem and took a bit of a learning curve to realize that a pea-size drop of wax is really more than sufficient per panel on my car.

When waxing if you do one panel a time makes it easy not to miss a spot. Wax should always be put on in a thin layer and you should pull it out in the sun to see if you missed anything.

I used to do the exact same thing on my own cars. Customer cars I am waaaay more meticulous. I almost always would find spots about a week after I did my cars. Customer cars always get 2 or 3 walks around before I give it the ok. I've actually gotten calls to clean up other detailers' leftover wax.

Waxing every week is a waste of time and product IMO. What wax are you using?

Over the winter I ended up with a lot of road rash on the front of my car. I've never had such a problem before. My mentality was, "If I apply wax more often this will help prevent such damage."

It sounds like using my Brinkman light one panel at a time, then pulling into direct sunlight when finished will help the most.

Thanks for the advice.

You wax your car every week? Nice !!! :applause:

As I'm sure you've already learned, try applying as thin as possible and when you start applying, start in the center of whatever section you are working on and work outwards

How is the paint prepped before waxing...? Clay, polish, paint cleaner?

I wash using Griot's car wash with a soft towel mit.

I've used P21S to prep the paint before, but when I looked very closely in bright sunlight I could tell that it wasn't really doing anything for water spots or scratches. I'm a little confused about this product.

I clayed my car once about a month ago and it hasn't really needed it since. It was my first time claying!

Then I put Griot's wax on using a foam applicator or microfiber towel. Eventually I'm going to get another brand of wax from AutoGeek, but I'd like to get to polishing first.

For now I'm using Griot's. It's cost effective and I can get it from Advanced Auto which is about 4 blocks from my house.

Eventually I plan on upgrading the wax to something from AutoGeek, but I'd like to get a polisher first.
