wet sanding question

Hi all I just wann make sure i don't mess this up. I am going to wet sand my 4 year old Nissan Murrano ( 2 doors). I am going to use 1500 and 3000 wet sand then I am going to use Meguires M105 ulta-cut compound and Menzerna sf4000 polish.

Is this a good combo or is the M05 to much cut after 3000 wet sand?

Car paint has lots of little scratches and paint is looking dull.

If this is factory paint and your first time wet sanding a vehicle I do not recommend this. The amount of clear on the paint is about the thickness of two post-it notes.

Plenty of info on this forum concerning how thin and precious clear coat is.

Mike I have done a door before but I just not sure if wet sanding it then using the M105 would be too much. Yes I am going to try compounding it out first and see if I can get the paint corrected first.

before you wet sand i would look into the CarPro Denim pads. also do you have a paint gauge? i would live with the orange peel on a new car. are you applying a coating afterwards for better protection?

refresh I don't have a paint gauge. I just want to get the paint looking like new without the scratches and swirl marks. Yes after i polish it I am going to use a sealer and wax on top to make it pop. getting car ready for winter

Least aggressive method first is what most would suggest. Have you tried to set a test-area first and compound it?
After buffing off the compound, shine light onto the surface and see if this produces the results you're looking for without the need of wet-sanding.

if you are going to wet sand it, i would personally go with a coating. you are going to be removing a lot of clear with sanding and need to get some added protection that i dont think a sealant and wax will help out as much as a coating. i would try the denim pads before sanding also.

+1 on Least Aggressive Method 1st

"Dull with lots of little scratches" does not = sanding with 1500#


What machine do you plan on using for the compounding and polishing?

If it's a DA, try the M105 with an Orange pad and moderate to heavy downward pressure


Take lots of before and after pictures abm d include close-ups too
