Yeah the hood was repainted, I noticed how thick the clear coat was when I key one part where I put a lot of pressure on.
When working on other cars, how will I know if I'm removing too much clear coat? If I lightly sand it with 2000 or 3000, will this cause premature coat failure?
You really can't. Without a PTG you simply have no way of knowing how much you're removing, and it will vary depending on paint type. Actual thickness will vary from car to car and you also won't know if it's been worked on before or not. On factory paint I wouldn't sand much further after you've knocked down all the high points.
This is why I urge you to use caution. Most car manufactures say that you should not remove more than .3 to .5 mils or you could risk premature CC failure.
Joe at Superior Shine did a nice write up a while back that give a general idea of what you're removing, though it varies from car to car.
