My sisters car got keyed, and I'm going to have to wetsand it. Only thing is, I don't have a rotary. The strongest pad I have is a Yellow CCS Pad, and the strongest polish I have is XMT3. I know this sounds stupid, but how many passes will be required to get rid of the sanding marks? 3 x XMT#3 with Yellow Pad @ speed 6, 2 x XMT#2 with Orange pad @ speed 6, that would most likely remove them wouldnt it..?

Its impossible to know without trying it.

I would never wetsand if all i had was a PC/UDM/cylco. If i tried it anyways i would use 3000 grit ONLY and have an assortment of 4" pads.

Can you feel the scratch with your finger nail? If so it may not be worth it to try and fix it ... it'll need a repaint. I would try the strongest polish you have by hand with a good terry cloth towel and try to remove as much as you can with that. Sure it may sound crazy but it can get the marks out. You'll need a lot of elbow grease though.

Yeah you can feel it with your nail. It's pretty deep. I'm going to touch it up then wetsand it so its flat and then continue. Alot of people doubt the PC's ability to remove sanding marks, but I think it can be done with alot of time and patience. I just want to know how many passes roughly will I need to to do get rid of the marks. I'll do a small test spot on the roof first.

Okay I just read on the Meguiars Forum, this dude wetsanded his hood with 2000 gritt, then removed the marks with this process. M83 x4, M80 x3, M21 x2. So I'm guessing if I use 2000 gritt, I'll need to to XMT3 x 4, XMT2 x 3, then XMT 1 x 2. Pretty sure that should remove them.

If it dosent remove the sanding marks you will have a bigger mess than what you started with.

That guy may have just gotten lucky, his paint may have been soft enough to correct with a PC, that does not mean it will work on all paints.

You know what? You got nothing to lose by trying and in fact it'll be a good test case for ya. I think your prowess with the pc was proved on that black detail you posted about a week ago. Someone keyed my old bimmer about 10 years ago and I kept applying touch up until it was above the surface and wet sanded it flat with 2000 grit and a rotary using 3m finishing polish. It can be done in your case, it just may take some time. Keep checking the temp and have a spray bottle with cold water in it to spray it down and keep it cool if it heats up. Hope that helps.
