What are the nasty products you still use?

LAs Totally Awesome feels like it will burn a hole in a lung without ventilation at full strength.

I am still having trouble with the strawberry scent of Fuzion. I feel like I'm turning into a sissy. What happened to good old automotive chemical smells? :)

Does LA's Totally Awesome work well on Tires and as a good APC? Is it better then Simple Green, because Simple Green is crap IMO.

I used it twice. Strong stuff. Cleaned the tire rubber of its brown coating and removed grime from the already damaged hub caps of a friends car. Seemed to slightly lighten/haze the black plastic wheel wells of the car, but I might have just removed many years of crud instead. Cut through the car wash tire dressing that didn't come off with APC+ at 1/10 or Diablo wheel cleaner at 1:6 on another car. Don't plan to use it again as it discolored my concrete driveway. OPC does the same thing on rubber but without the fumes or discoloring my driveway.

I won't buy Simple Green for automotive use again either. Other products work better.

For an APC, I will spend the money on Optimum Power Clean which I know seems expensive compared to some products. At at 1:3 dilution, the 17 oz bottle will be as cheap as Meguires Hot Rims wheel cleaner on an ounce per ounce basis. It will be safer and have more utility than a wheel cleaner. If you buy the gallon, it will be 1/4 the cost than an OTC wheel cleaner plus be a terrific APC.

Megs APC+ is not bad when you buy a gallon at $12 a gallon on sale, however I feel that OPC is safer and more effective.

As you know, Corey, others and I are addicted to Ultima WW+. Im also addicted to OID;s bubble gum scent. Kurt, If you waant to be born again hard, buy Iron X and inhale deeply upon opening. That will rock your strawberry world!

Jim, I knew that I'd get a good response from you...

"Nothing like the smell of napalm in the morning."

Is Meg's regular APC just like Simple Green or is it better? I'm just looking for something light for wheel wells and tires. I like Griot's Wheel Cleaner because it's safe.

I think that both Simple Green and APC+ are citrus based but I'm not sure. I would used APC+ before using Simple Green again. APC+ can be diluted to be very strong or very light as you need it.

ive used some serious chemicals in my day so nothing i have used for detailing is all that bad. Megs Wheel brightener will clear out your sinuses if the wind is wrong. but i use alot of the products mentioned here and they dont bother me. although ive done body work and only some of the paints bother me.

I'm using Griot's Undercarriage Spray. The smell is strong, unpleasant, and lingers for a couple of days, and it's also greasy. But it does a good job making my wheel wells invisible, and it lasts for weeks.

Thanks for the reco. I've been looking for the right undercarriage spray for trucks and older cars that need that "invisible look" at times. I want something that is easy to apply, lasts a long time, doesn't run in the rain and doesn't attract dust and dirt.

Does The Griot's fit that description?

I think it may, though I'm not sure if I'd describe it "easy" to apply. It certainly ain't as easy to apply as, say, Stoner Trim Shine. I spray it into the wheel well and then I use a large foam pad to even the stuff out and ensure total coverage. I always wear gloves. But in my experience Griot's Undercarriage Spray (a) lasts a long time (certainly longer than anything else I've tried), (b) doesn't run in the rain, and (c) doesn't attract dust and dirt. I think this is accurate. I'd get the 35 oz bottle first and try it out first before purchasing the gallon jug.

I will say this: one of my wife's former workmates commented on the wheel wells of our CR-V a few days after I detailed it. She wanted to know how I made the wells look so good. It's not often that anyone notices wheel wells, at least not in a positive way. :)

Thanks for the follow up. A 35 oz bottle should be the right size to try.

DuPont 3939S solvent based enamel prep/cleaner. It will dissolve tar on contact, remove any old wax or sealant, and works great at removing tar stains in carpet. Do not use on plastic, as it will haze it!!

Endurance tire gel is kinda messy!

I apply it with a dedicated sponge applicator(without gloves) and it kinda seeps to the other side of the applicator and soils my fingers lol!

A little laquer thinner and mineral spirits still holds a spot in my product shelf! :dblthumb2:
