What are the REAL benefits of a long throw polisher?

I disagree, had an issue with my first 3401 when new and it needed replacement, my Rupes on the otherhand never disappointed and will soon find myself taking the plunge on another Rupes.

Another trade off is you can't use pads from 3"-6.5" on a single large throw machine.

That's actually not true^. Anyone can slap a 5" Griots Boss backing plate onto their G21 and pair it with pads such as 5.5" Carpro Gloss Pads.
[notice the hole in the middle, they're made for long throw orbitals]

Personally, I noticed a considerable difference in the polishers maneuverability around tighter areas after switching down to the 5" backing plate. It's pretty sweet.

There's plenty of options out there besides the Gloss Pads.. LC Thinpros are also 5.5" as are the Buff & Shine Low Pros 5.5"
LC HD Orbitals, which are the ones I chose to go with are available in 6"

If you really want to minimize, 5" pads fit perfectly onto the backing plate. Are they the most ideal combo? No, but it's not like you'd be trying to polish a whole vehicle with this setup, so it should work just fine if you need to polish a small area.
