What Camera do you use?

I'm trying to talk my dad into that one. He wants the D80, but it's too pricey. I've told him the D70 will really be just as good, but I think maybe he's leary of buying last year's model for some reason.

I was thinking about upgrading to the D80 but there is not enough improvements between it and the D70 to justify the cost. If or when I do upgrade it will be to the D200.

I've had the D70 for over 2 years and the only complaint I have is noise with higher ISO settings, but it's easily fixed with something like Noiseware. Other then that it is an awesome camera.

Digging this thread back up....Right now I'm using a Fuji S5000. It works pretty good, but I'm looking at maybe hopping on the SLR wagon. I'm just looking for an entry-level DSLR until I can get a little more comfortable. I was looking at the Nikon D40 and 50. Anyone have any experience with either one, good or bad?

The Canon XT is a great entry level SLR. It can also be used at the pro level no problem.

I've been contemplating upgrading my Canon G6 as well. Right now I'm leaning towards the Canon 30D. Just not completely sure I want to drop that much money on a camera yet.

Have you guys been looking at the Sony H-series? They look like some nice nice cameras!

Haven't used the D40, but heard its a very nice camera. I think Best Buy actually has a kit w/ lens on sale for 749.00.

I'm a Canon guy myself, but its like Chevys and Fords. Both good, depends who you ask.

Still using an "old skool" canon 300d. lol
Still got mine too. Can't see much difference between the current "entry level" to upgrade to the xti. Don't think I'm good enough to justify the jump to the pro level 30D though.

My dad finally dropped the coin on the D80. Of course he's not totally happy with it, but he's that way with everything. He always has to complain about something :D I think it's mainly that he has to re-learn a new camera since his last one (first digital camera) was a Fuji.

The one thing I don't like about it (not sure if the D40 would be the same) is that you can't use the lcd when taking a picture. I love using the lcd and would hate to have use the view finder all the time.

that's the one feature the rebel xt lacks as well----you have to look through the viewfinder to take the pic:confused: Are all DSLR's that way? Why?

Most are that way. I guess it's something to do with the light reflecting in the camera. The light is bounced off a mirror to the view finder, so there is no image hitting the sensor of the camera for use with the lcd. I guess the camera would have to be bigger and more expensive if it were to have the capability to do multiple reflections for the lcd. I'm not sure I totally understand it all, but that was what I had read.

so far the Sony has lived up to everything offered. Pics are wonderful and clear. The video it takes exceeds most camcorder quality and the battery life is much better than past cameras using alkaline batteries. Even the doctors were impressed with pics and video in the operating room. (birth of son)

The viewfinder/LCD display issue wouldn't be much for me. I use the viewfinder more times than not on my Fuji S5000 anyways. I don't know why really, I just got into the habit of doing so. I'm going to go play with the D40 and the XT at Best Buy today. Both are rated comparably from what I've read so far. I use Nikon optics for all my hunting gear and love them, so if their camera's quality is anything like their optics line I'll probably grab a D40.

That's the deal that got me interested in finally upgrading to DSLR. I honestly haven't looked at digital cams in 2+ years, so I had no idea they've come down in price that much. I think its a great deal considering you get 2 lenses with it. Plus the $200 in GC I have for Best Buy makes upgrades all that much more appealing.

D40 has been replaced with the D50. Older model, probably trying to unload their stock and make room for the new models.
I got my Rebel (6MP, not XT) the same way, on clearance at Sears for $300!

With DSLRs, you want to invest in good lenses. You can always upgrade the body and use the same lenses.

DSLR's are a set up from point and shoot cameras. Cant use the lcd to take pictures. Its a lot better to use the view finder.

Thanks for your input guys. I played with both the D40 and the Canon XT, and to me they both seem to be a wash feature-wise. I did like how the D40 felt in my hand, and also I liked the LCD screen a little better too. I think that's the one I'm going to go with. :righton: I'll post up some shots of the truck once I get aquainted with the camera over the weekend, I'll be picking it up hopefully on Friday.
