What car should I get?

To add a few more points. Stay away from the Mustang, Camaro or anything American if you want reliability. I am sorry to say, these cars just have problems, period. My friend had a 2010 Mustang GT and he had multiple issues, not to mention horrendous customer service from the dealerships.

My RSX also has a K20, and like I mentioned, its just been dead reliable. I am not exaggerating when I say I have had no issues. In Fact, my car never went to the dealer for a warranty repair of any sort. They are also relatively inexpensive to maintain. Ironically, I bought an "Acura" for that white glove service, and I never needed to use it! Oh, and Hondas and Acura's for that matter maintain their value extremely well. My RSX was about $23k and I think I could still get $15-16k for it now and its 6 years old.

It really just depends on what you ultimately want, and whats most important to you. Fun to drive at the sacrifice of reliability and practicality? High reliability, low cost of ownership and practical and fun. For instance, my RSX is fun to drive, but its no where near as fast as the Z. But it does get 29mpg on the highway, and real 22 in the city, and i can fit stuff in it.

A car purchase is such an emotional thing, yet its also quite an analytical process. My advice is go with the Civic. If you like the way it drives, you really cant go wrong over the long haul. You will have a great ownership experience, should be able to afford it reasonably, and being that its only a Civic, keep you wanting for more (which is great motivation to work hard and achieve higher levels of success).

:whs: and since you're planning on keeping it for 4 to 5 years...I would DEFINITELY get the Honda. Of all the ones listed, I would say Honda will last you the longest...again...this is just my opinion.

2012 ford focus titanium, IMO best economic car. When helping my sister buy a 4 banger four door we looked at most of them, chevys look like crap, toyota same, didnt want a korean car. We were left with Honda civic an focus. The focus titanium comes with a sony 12 speaker system with a sub in the truck( sounds amazing), automatically parallel parks itself, the best back up camera in the biz, sport mode for the tranny, gets 39hwy( I got that hand calc) and about 31 city. Biggest thing is it looks the best out if all I them IMO. Yes Toyota and Honda supposedly last forever, but if maintained properly any car will. Ive seen plenty Hondas and toyotas fail.

I vote either the Focus or the Gensis as mentioned above.

I would never buy a corolla, scion. Maybe a civic. But I would definitely get either of the two mentioned above in a heart beat over you choices.

Thanks for the tip! I was surprised on how cheap I could get a Z for.

I plan on keeping whatever car I get for about 5 or 6 years probably. So you think it would be a waste to get a new car? I plan on having my BMW M3 by the time I'm 30 and my Lamborghini by the time I'm 30-38 :)

Going new certainly has its advantages. Piece of mind is a huge plus. You know exactly how the car is cared for from day one. You can also get exactly what you're looking for and aren't subject to the whims of the market.

If you go used then when you go to sell you probably won't get as much as if you were to buy new. On the other hand, I think the amount you pay for the car will be more than enough to make up for that. It really depends on what you would buy used and what you would buy new. I think with a shortish time span like you're looking at you might want to consider resale value in your decision.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I have looked into the Subaru WRX, VW GTI and Hyundai Genesis. Something about buying a Hyundai just makes me cringe for some reason. I love the WRX but were looking at about $37K new for what I would want. Way out of my price range. And the GTI about $32K. Those are rough estimates I've gotten from their websites.

I prefer nimble quick cars compared to cars with RAW power. I really appreciate Mustangs but they just don't fit me. I'm more of a Porsche guy if you think of it that way. Keep the suggestions, experiences and opinions coming!

My pops has had nothing but problems since he bought my mom a brand new 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe. He's been back to the dealer so many times to fix random electrical problems. Now he's bringing it back again because hte display is out. I wish he would have taken it back the first sigh of trouble.

Not to derail the topic, but I'm looking into buying a new car within the year. I probably want to keep it around $35,000. Any advice/suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I would caution on rough estimates from websites, as I was able to get a car that I had thought was out of my price range, for less than cars than were in my price range from incentives and local deals. You need a PHD to decipher the car business and the deals that individual dealerships make, but if you are shopping it is worth visitng the dealerships to get the real price and cost of the car. Easier said than probably done from my end, since I live in New York and there is every kind of dealership wihtin a 15 mnute drive.

Get what you can afford and something you like. I would also encourage you to buy NEW.

Where we live Shawn you have to think about the weather... Rwd isn't that great in snow. Once you get used to it, it's not bad, but what are the weight ratios on the z? My car is 50/50 and I still have issues sometimes. If there is more than an inch of snow, don't plan on getting anywhere.

I would agree as well with the Subaru. The starting range is mid 20s and rocket 0-60 in about I think 4.7. That's for the STI, but I'm sure the regulars aren't much slower. If that's not an option, go for the Civic. Honda has great reliability.

I'd suggest a rotary RX-8, but I'm biased. If you're a person that loves to drive and interact with the car, there's nothing like the high revving rotary.

On a sensible side, try out the Mazdaspeed 3. One of the quickest in the bunch and gives you Mazdas unique feel of the road.

The focus had a more unique feeling then the Mazda 3imo:)
