To add a few more points. Stay away from the Mustang, Camaro or anything American if you want reliability. I am sorry to say, these cars just have problems, period. My friend had a 2010 Mustang GT and he had multiple issues, not to mention horrendous customer service from the dealerships.
My RSX also has a K20, and like I mentioned, its just been dead reliable. I am not exaggerating when I say I have had no issues. In Fact, my car never went to the dealer for a warranty repair of any sort. They are also relatively inexpensive to maintain. Ironically, I bought an "Acura" for that white glove service, and I never needed to use it! Oh, and Hondas and Acura's for that matter maintain their value extremely well. My RSX was about $23k and I think I could still get $15-16k for it now and its 6 years old.
It really just depends on what you ultimately want, and whats most important to you. Fun to drive at the sacrifice of reliability and practicality? High reliability, low cost of ownership and practical and fun. For instance, my RSX is fun to drive, but its no where near as fast as the Z. But it does get 29mpg on the highway, and real 22 in the city, and i can fit stuff in it.
A car purchase is such an emotional thing, yet its also quite an analytical process. My advice is go with the Civic. If you like the way it drives, you really cant go wrong over the long haul. You will have a great ownership experience, should be able to afford it reasonably, and being that its only a Civic, keep you wanting for more (which is great motivation to work hard and achieve higher levels of success).
