I can't call this a swirl, more like a tornado of scratches. What, on earth, would cause this? These defects were on my car when I bought it.

As for correction, hand polishing with an orange pad, 3M compound, then Menzerna 2500 also with the orange, made it look better, but its still there. Recommendations?

Those are swirl marks :( Improper washing and taking care of before is how it is caused when you bought it do you have a da?

+1

Your choices are to spend more time with the elbow grease or buy yourself a polisher to make correction much less time consuming and easier to achieve.

A porter-cable or Griots Garage orbital polishers are great machines to get you started without breaking the bank after a recent vehicle purchase.

Check around your car paint, I would imagine similar condition all over

Like valley said both of those are great polishers and there are so many other things you will find you can use them for!

If you don't have one buy a polisher. It will make life so much easier to remove those scratches. If you can't afford the $140 for one right now that's ok. Harbor freight has one for around $50 that will get the job done.

As for the scratches. They are caused from tons of things. Drying a car with a cotton towel is a huge cause.

You need a machine polisher. You will never achieve the correction your looking for by hand, especially for the whole car

I'm thinking that your swirls are caused mostly by improper washing and drying as others have mentioned already.
What is your process for washing and drying?

Thanks for all the great responses! The reason I thought they were more severe than typical swirls is that my Menzerna 2500 by hand did a great job on removing what I thought were swirls - maybe they were holograms/marring. Anyway, yes, I'm ordering a Griots polisher today.

My drying technique is to sheet water off, then lay a large bath towel down on the car and let it soak up water, then follow up with waffle MFT. I don't wipe with the cotton towel.

Oddly, the defects like this are only on the lower 20% of the car.

These defects were in the paint when I bought the car. The car was inside, in a showroom, under lights, and the defects were all out there - full disclosure, with offer to get the paint corrected or take money off. I took the money. The car shines and glows like no tomorrow, especially after the Menzerna and Collinite 915. But under certain light, THAT.

Thanks again all. I have a Lake County Orange, Red, and Black. What else do you recommend?

Chrono,

Not sure of a budget here, but I am just gonna list products that I would recommend you get/use and list a brief description

Also, I am not sure of the prep steps/yr of car/level of decontamination on the car so keep in mind I am listing this as if you bought car and did nothing to it

--Iron X - chemical decontamination to remove iron out of paint
--Clay - mechanical decontamination (Iron-X wont remove everything) (Nanoskin is a nice alternative to clay, works fantastic. lasts longer, if you drop it you just wash it off and don't have to toss it away like clay)
--Clay Lubricant if you have none
(Do the plastic baggy test-- put hand in baggy, touch paint, if it feels rough at all, clay it)

Since you are getting the GG 6inch DA, get a 5 inch backing plate and 5.5 pads (lake county orange Orange, white, black for example) Lake Country 5 1/2 x 7/8 inch Beveled Edge Foam Pads, buffing pads, Lake Country curved edge pads, polishing pads

I see you have a compound and polish, others may recommend certain products here. But, I'll leave it to the pros. I personally use Megs Ultimate compound, megs M105, megs M205, and other little samples I have.

then go ahead and find yourself a nice wax/sealant or even coating you'd like to use as your last step

--Waffle Weave Microfiber towel for drying

best of luck!

Thanks Robert. I definately clay, and lately have liked using Poor Boy's World Spray and Wipe as lubricant. However, I've never used the Iron X. It can't hurt and can only help, so thanks!
