What did we do before smart phones/internet.

I seriously doubt that alcohol consumption has in any way been reduced by cell phones and internet. Infact, I would suggest the opposite. We are becoming a society with no social being and no respect for anyone other than ourselves. Perhaps we are getting more comfortable with loneliness....

What happened to children playing baseball in the streets ?? What happened to date night ??? What happened to having to knock on the door of your potential date and asking her father for permission ??? Since when is it acceptable to carry on a conversation on the phone while shopping, paying, or ordering something with another live person ???

While the internet is a great gift and certainly put anything you want at your fingertips, that also is likely is worst feature. I just wonder if we will ever see "no internet" like we now see "no smoking".

..... off soapbox , small nightcap before bed !:props:

I am sitting here looking at autogeek not having to watch dancing with the stars. NCIS on Tuesdays means the tv is mine then so Mondays is my better half and daughters.

My question is what did we do before we could check out autogeek? I check out hunting sites to. Makes me want to read a book but I have nook for that so technology is great.

Anyway this is a great site and thanks for all of the information. I love all the pictures of cars that are detained too.

Before the Internet I was on Electronic Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) ;)

Then I started using Fidonet.

Finally I got on Compuserve...

Lots of things were available before the Internet for us true geeks LOL

How about you did not have the more bills. No cell phone bill and an internet bill. You also have now just do everything on the phone. Like everyone said no interaction. I bet most kids don't know how to right a letter and use snail mail.

The more bills thing is relative. I don't have a landline; just my cellphone. Professionally, I need my cellphone. Even if I didn't need it, I'd have it. What on earth do I need a land line for if there's a phone in my pocket? I also don't have cable/sattelite. Using a small set-top box and internet services like Hulu and Netflix, (and even able to rent movies through Amazon), I get everything I care to watch through the internet. (Admittedly, I'm not a big TV person.) When I was a kid we had Cable TV and a landline. Now I have a cellphone and internet. The bills are relatively similar. Of course, if you cling on to a landline or still have cable/satellite and haven't 'cut the cord', it's understandable. But then, a lot of you in this thread are pro detailers who probably do maintenance washes and the like. There are all KINDS of costs that some find valuable and others thing are a waste.

Took us forever to get my wifes parents to get rid of their landline. Wasn't used for MONTHS on end, but they were always afraid there would be an emergency and both of their cellphones would fail. Because it's new, so it's scary! The landline could fail, too. Someone could hit a pole, or the aging lines could just stop working. But it's old, so it's okay!

There was a Psychology today article a while back asking the question on whether or not we actually have LESS interaction. Sure it's through a phone or social media now, but people are interacting more, and with more people than ever before. Food for thought anyway. (Personally I think people should value face to face interaction and put their phones in their pockets at the dinner table; but, in the interest of discussion I'll throw that out there. It is probably true that teens with cellphone interact with more people every day than pre-cellphone teens did).

When the telephone began to catch on, there were advocacy groups trying to block the telephone from coming in to their towns. They said people would never leave their homes. They would call people on the telephone instead of going to their homes, they would use the telephone to order their groceries instead of going to the store, etc. (All things promised as opportunities by the telephone companies, it was hot technology when new!).

Nowadays we hear "Why do they have to text, why can't they just pick up the phone for some real human interaction!". Funny how things change. But one thing is constant; if it's new, it must be bad.

So from what I can understand you guys think that having conversation with people on forums is not human interaction?

There are many ways to interact with other people, live talking is just one form and it may or not be better.

One thing I do know is that people were a lot less educated before the Internet. Now no matter what you want to know you can learn by using Google or Youtube in a matter of seconds. People may not be more intelligent, heck I see morons everyday, but those who want to learn something have access to an unprecedented amount of knowledge because of the Internet.

So please save me the "Good old days stories" LOL!

BTW I still play board games with my friends every week, we still go see movies anytime anything we want to see comes to the big screen (usually 3 times a month) and we still have conversation in the real world. For me the Internet has not prevented any social interaction.

+1.

For me the internet has definitely been an enabler for additional hobbies that I probably would have never sought out otherwise. I've learned so much information from various forums including this one. The amount of information available is amazing.

We are evolving.

I think that is a good thing. I wish I was around 1,000 years from now. To see how much more we'd evolve.
