What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

Never have seen that in stock at any of the 4 Harbor Freight stores I have been to here on LI.

But that's not saying the PA ones don't stock it.

It's on their website and the stores around me show it as in stock. The delivery drivers probably just don't want to deal with long island accents? :dunno:

Keep pushing your luck, son…

By the time you get to the other end of the island, you'll forget what you were doing anyway...

I gave up coatings. Not worth all the effort for people to not take care of em. Good money but doesn’t make sense here…not yet. Went back to spray on wipe off stuff or sio2 spray and rinse.
I completely agree. I still do them. As a matter of fact I've got a Palisade coming in Thursday for some Mohs but when the customer called me I gave her my honest opinion on coatings. I think they're great but 80% of my customers don't maintain them with a simple monthly rinse less wash and are pissing their money away. She's taking possession of the SUV Thursday and wants it to look as new as possible so she is still going to go with a three year coating and according to her, her husband will have no problem maintaining it but she seems like the exception and not the rule.

I did a 5 year coating back in January and the guy called me out of the blue two weeks ago for a maintenance wash. He hadn't washed the car at all since I coated it. I did a decon wash to restore the coating and it worked but I doubt it will survive 18 months at this rate.

Nice insight.

I work away from my home for 28 days straight on a marine vessel and it's cold here so i can go months without washing my car. But I'm doing much better since I discovered rinseless! :)

I'm going to step back from ceramic coating this year. I want something more relaxing and i can use a primer polish to prep the surface again whenever i want to try another LSP. I love primer polishes. Just 2-3 slow passes is all i usually do. You can polish a whole car in a few hours.

I detail on the side. I’m a teacher during the week and there are definitely times the coating regime burns me out. I like the money but sometimes I wish customers would just opt for a nice exterior detail with a ceramic sealant. I think it’s better for most customers anyways since I know they won’t maintain the coating.

I have used the 3401.

Just put my hands on the Hercules this past weekend.

If the Hercules lasts for any amount of time with no problems, then FLEX just lost their weekend warrior market for the 3401.

Damn...wonder what the griots g9 fans would do. You have a g9. I mean lifetime warrenty for a few more dollars i guess you be the only big selling point. Whats your thought on that?

That’s all it takes. A 30 to 40 minute rinseless wash once a month and use Gyeon Ceramic Detailer as a drying aid, my current favorite coating maintenance product, and they would be good to go but that doesn’t even happen.

A friend of a friend retired, bought himself a new white pick-up, accessorised it, then had it ceramic coated. But he's not really physically capable of washing it himself, so it may have been washed a few times in the last 3 years. The paint is now flat and sort of cloudy. They asked me if I can fix it, Nope, I don't touch ceramic coatings, I don't apply them, and I don't "fix" them. Too many people think a ceramic coating means you don't have to do any maintenance, sort of like when they used to get dealer applied paint protection last century.

Copy that.

Speaking or hb... last time i was there i walked past the buffers. I picked up the hb version of the 3401. Now mind you i have never heald a flex 3401 in person...BUT just based of feels, if hb 3401 clone feels anything like the flex 3401 in the hands, then im thankful for the supa beast.

Mainly i did not like the front of the machine where you would grip or guide the machine. Also the backing plate seemed further back from the front of the machine. The trigger grip area just didnt feel as eronomic for me personally.

But like i said this is all based off of feel only.

Communication is the biggest part of any coating job for me. I go over the realistic benefits of a coating and after two weeks I have the customer bring back the vehicle for an inspection and we wash the car together. I go over step by step how to perform a rinseless wash, send them a link for a tutorial video I made just in case they forget and give them a few maintenance products to help get them startled on their journey. I’m not rich enough to spend a thousand on something and then let it go to waste but apparently there are plenty of people out there who are.

I like your approach to customer service:xyxthumbs:

After 24 years of teaching, educating people is in my DNA even if I’m doing it in my garage and not my classroom. I can’t take all the credit though. I have a good mentor I lean on for business advice.

Do they follow your advice? Most people in car groups (not detailing related) seem to view a coating as the be all to end all in washing cars. Seems they assume coat it once, never deal with it again... totally missing out on the maintenance part.

I had someone once telling me how great brand XYZ was along with every other product they made. When we got down to the details, turns out it was the coating underneath they admired so much.

I’d say 80% don’t if not 90%. The only one I know for sure is the first customer I had after my training course. He made me feel bad because he was washing his car more than I did my own. Our daughters play together so when I went to get my daughter one day I say inside his garage. He had bought stuff I didn’t have. His detailing cart is better than mine but that’s what I like to see. You don’t need to go all out like he did but he’s the rare customer that looks at a ceramic coating and his vehicles as an investment.

On the flip side, I did a brand new BMW M550 in January with P&S Legend, which is by far the worst coating I’ve ever had to apply. After markups, tax and title fees this vehicle was right at 6 figures. I’m a home based detailer so my customers are generally within a 5 mile radius of me so they’re very close. After coating the vehicle I texted him a few times to remind him to bring it back for a free maintenance wash and tutorial to show him how to protect this investment. He kept putting it off so I left it alone. Then about two weeks ago he texts me out of the blue for a maintenance wash and come to find out, it was the first wash since I coated it. I hit it with Bilt Hamber Touchless, Carpro Descale (great for reviving coatings) and Carpro Reset to bring it back to life. It worked but the coating’s gonna struggle to make it past a year if this continues. He seems to be the rule and not the exception.

I try to communicate to customers that the biggest factor in the longevity of their coating is their maintenance routine. I’m at the point now where I will tell a customer to start with a ceramic sealant or a one year coating just to see if they are going to maintain it.

Might need a proper wash and unblock the coating if it's even there after 3 year's
