What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

Today was a very puzzling mad scientist day

I kind of combined three recent threads into one experiment

First was testing the local red dirt for iron

I waited until I had a good coat of it and hit it with Megs Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner

It’s not the strongest iron decon but it doesn’t scare me either

I thought I got a reaction until a few minutes after

bac01e114bb94862ff7d1430b34dc8ff.jpg

I let it dwell and rinsed it off and moved down the door
fe9315c4617f0543afa1164b60532b7a.jpg

I used the rest of the door to test pretreating with ONR at 2 strengths as requested by BlackCarBlues

At the last minute I decided to add my OPC at 3:1 which is my hard core pretreatment for mystery blobs, bird bombs, sap, etc (it’s not pictured) as kind of a control

7abd40680a5088c05c141f22bd1fd655.jpg

I soaked 3 strips with each and let it dwell and surprisingly all of the test areas looked exactly like the iron decon test with small dark spots
1065bb36788f32acfe62fb5ac8edd6e7.jpg

It’s obvious that ONR isn’t detecting iron so my red dirt iron test is now questionable

The wind picked up and everything started to dry so instead of foaming and a mild rinse to see which ONR was most efficient as a pre rinse I just hit the panel with the hose on a shower setting to rinse off as much dirt as possible

I am not sure what or why but rinsing the ONR areas showed that very little if any of the dirt was dissolved or encapsulated or carried away like we expect a rinseless prewash to do

af2033183ac51b1d74a782e363edba72.jpg

By this point all my experiments were going against my expectations and I was also running out of shade and fighting the wind

I rinsed the truck really well and did a quick multi mitt wash and TT WW dry and called it good for the day
f25579514cc09187e99b0bf3e8b29ba3.jpg

I am mystified by the almost complete lack of anything by the ONR

Obviously I am aware that I didn’t follow through with the complete rinseless process but I was so freaked out I decided lots of soap and water was the only way to go

My 15+ years of faith in ONR is kind of shaken right now

Color me confused

Yeah i’ve come to the conclusion for me pre treats (except Bilt Hamber) don’t remove much. Hopefully it softens.

Can you get Bilt Hamber? If shipping from UK would be better maybe try Ultimate Finish. Only thing i’ve seen remove a significant amount of road film dirt before contact wash.

I have seen some BH products on Amazon but I need to look now that I have something specific to look for

I think the thing messing me up the most is me ASSUMING all these years that an ONR prerinse had a significant effect on the overall process and now I completely question that

I guess I always took it for granted and never stopped and experimented

I guess if it only increases results by 5% it's worth it in the long run considering it's a few pennies and a bit of time

I am going to redo the prerinse part of this several times in the next few weeks and add foaming to the experiment as well

I will ONR QD pretreat one door and leave the one next to it untreated, let it dwell a few minutes, hit it with foam and let that dwell, then a gentle rinse to see which door had more dust and dirt removed

I don't know if I need to look into a stronger iron remover or not, the Megs has worked in the past

I think you can test the PH level of the soil strip like things that you can get from a garden store.

BH AutoFoam will do everything you wanted ONR to do.

Washed the SB Honda for the second time in less than a week. Need to do the ST as well, but that will have to wait until Saturday

I cleaned my windscreen today, used Angelwax Vision, then gave it a Rain-X treatment. I bought new wiper blades today and didn't want to put them on dirty glass. I tried to clean and treat the old blades a couple weeks ago, didn't work. I was still getting webbing on the return stroke, very annoying. I usually buy genuine Toyota, but decided to try something new, Bosch Aero Twins, the guy in the shop thought I was nuts buying 3, two 14" and one 16", he didn't know the FJ has 3 front wipers, not cheap either, $45 each.

Today was tonneau cover day

I had neglected it and suffered the consequences

The skunk stripe is where there is no brush strip at the entrance to the housing cover, so nowhere near as much dirt gets swept off when it rolls up
9b814bf5ff35704a1ff5ee8ef52e65fb.jpg

The only thing I have tried that gets it clean is Dawn Powerwash, a pretty stiff nail brush, and lots of elbow grease
54d0cec6a0c3c059c8368bf0adad399d.jpg

Once it’s clean I do a good application of 303 on the vinyl cover, the stock plastic top caps, and the frame itself

Better

Here is where it all goes off the rails

The first year we had the truck it lived outside at our condo and I ended up spending most of 2018 in Alaska because my oldest son fell way off the wagon and needed rescuing and stuff

That left my wife in Hawaii by herself (she can’t tolerate Alaska winters) and she had one of the residents in our condo “detail” the truck several times

4 years later I am still mitigating damage

I have no idea what he used that could do this to powder coated metal but once it is washed and dried it looks like this
888e6440830ad90115b72dd914206388.jpg

This white ghosting is on a lot of the metal frame and rails and nothing I have tried will remove it

Dressings look good for a short while but it eventually shows through

Waxes and sealants protect it but do little to hide the appearance

Short of taking it off and disassembling it and sending it over to Oahu to get powder coated again I am out of ideas

I wonder if there is an equivalent to something like Solution Finish that would work

I could always take it off and spray paint the metal but that’s not really a long term solution

If I get the finish sorted out is there some kind of ceramic that I should use to go over it like Cerakote for trim or something?

All suggestions welcome

Engine bay day

Blown red dirt

Ugly

d788202ae52eafe7ae37c63c9cd2a3ef.jpg

Scrubbed down, blown out with leaf blower and sprayed down with 303/distilled water at 1:3

beecd73eb04a9c6408bd75a56563bbe4.jpg

My mix was blown around the engine bay for best coverage, allowed to dwell a bit and then blown off once more and a final microfiber wipe down

Poor man’s Hyper Dressing

Now it looks mo bettah

Then I did a maintenance wash with a TW WW finish

I cleaned the exterior windows too

I noticed they need a deep cleaning soon

I didn’t take any exterior pics

Happy Sunday

Windy and cool afternoon, but got another wash/detail in. That truck took a beating on the way home Thursday night during that ice storm. When i was flushing the undercarriage, i still found ice buildup in skid plates etc.. Still frozen. Truck did not skip a beat that night. Can't wait till the warmer weather to finally set the garage back up!! Have to say, the TW SLICK & SLIDE soap is impressive.

This is becoming a weekly thing and I LOVE IT...another clean up on the ES

Today's pre-wash consisted of 1.5 gallons of distilled water mixed with 5 oz of Koch Chemie Gsf and 2 oz of IGL Blizzark. First I cleaned the tires and wheels with Auto-Fanatic foaming wheel cleaner and used the Speed Master for the barrels and Mother's wheel brush for the face/spokes.

I then emptied the entire contents mixed in the IK Foam Pro 12 on the ES, also underneath, tires/wheels/wells and the grill and nooks real good. I then rinsed it down in the bay and drove home to do a RW.

For the RW I reached for Turtle Wax RW (old stuff) I added 7 oz to 3.5 gallons of warm water and my Aqua sponge and got after it. I usually pre-treat but since I pre-washed the ES I didn't feel it was needed. This stuff smells great, cleans VERY well and leaves a nice gloss...why was it discontinued again I also used it to clean out the jams, tires/wheels and gave the engine bay a nice wipe down too.

I finished by adding some 303 Tire Balm to the Blizzaks, pulled the d/s WeatherTech out and used the leftover TW RW to clean the WeatherTech floorliner real good and wiped down the other ones. Next was some CarPro Clarify on the inside AND outside glass. Lastly I grabbed the Griot's Garage spray Trim and Detail spray for the grill. This product makes treating those intricate areas a breeze and Lexus owners should probably grab a couple bottles

I know there's salt dust on the road but it's still looking better than crusty salt all over the place AND the temps are trending up, gotta watch for potholes and "thawing lanes"

I've seen companies in the past that made wheel shields for put tire dressing on the tires. I'm looking for something like that to clean my tires and keep my wheels dry/clean. Anyone still make them?

I'm going to try Griot's foam tire cleaner because I can just wipe it off instead of rinsing it. Car is currently inside because of winter storage.

I didn't realize they were this brown!

I had just finished drying the car when a swarm of bees flew overhead. I looked up to see where they were headed and when I came back to the car, it was covered in bee pollen poo.

So, I washed it again. Such is life.

RW with Griot's BF RW. Also took out the WeatherTech's and used the WeatherTech cleaner with a Tuf Shine tire brush. Then the WeatherTech protectant.

Did a simple rinse off in the spray booth car wash yesterday and the drove home and did a waterless wash with 3D Waterless Wash. Not perfect, but much better than what it was.

Just making sure....that's NOT the Heritage Edition, right? Even if it's not, that's my 2nd favorite color combo for the GT350
