What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

My second car had chrome bumpers and on the wheels. I occasionally used steel wool on the wheels, with WD40, but I never had to on the bumpers, they stayed good for the 3 years I had it. This shot is from around 1990, the car is a 79 Holden Commodore.

It looked ok, but it was a slug, 95hp and 163lbft. Still the only vehicle I've got a speeding ticket in, going downhill of course. I did fit a 2.5inch sports exhaust and Genie headers, which may have raised it to 100hp, I still have the Genie keyring they gave me at the time. Lowered it on Lovell springs with Boge shocks, that's why the stance looks right. Here's a pic of the race version.

Rain off and on today, but had to try out N914. Truck was basically clean from sundays wash, so i just rinsed off with garden hose and pretreated in ik multi, with same mix from my rinseless bucket solution. Something i learned from one of Guz videos.

N914 worked very nice, could feel and see the surface...just looked clean. only needed one gauntlet drying towel.

Buick was dirty after getting caught in the rain today, and against my better judgement and my normal regimen of always using a pw and foam cannon to prewash a dirty vehicle i ended up just giving the buick the same treatment as the truck.

One thing i did notice was the buicks paint was very grabby apon drying with gauntlet towel. No slickness to the paint. Could it be because on monday it got a good decon and hit with pure rinseless? And no topper? Idk.

With buick's paint feeling grabby i couldnt let it be..so i grabbed Amplify and went to town. Instant gratification.

Didnt have phone, so no pics to oggle at. Ha

So after driving the EN in the rain this morning/afternoon I was able to get it washed up

I started with Bilt-Hamber Surfex @3:1 for the tires/wheels/wells, all 4 brushes called into action this time around! Once cleaned and rinsed, I topped them off w/ Pure:est Protection and Gloss (their version of Wetcoat), now everything is clean and protected

Next was the pre-wash and for this it was 3 oz of Nv Snow and 1 oz of DIY Detail Incredible Suds in my Griot's Garage foam gun. I let the mix dwell a little longer before rinsing away, no problem

Next was the 2BM and 1 oz of Bilt-Hamber AutoWash knocked it out of the park, one of those "you can SEE the clean". Rinsed it down and the leftover Pure:est Protection and Gloss was used on all the glass and areas around the trunk badges as I used a barrel brush & Bilt-Hamber Surfex around them. Free flowing water to make drying easier

Finishing things up I used Ech2o mixed @15:1 as a drying aid, why not more GLOSS

Now it's time to pick up my daughter from daycare, the EN is ready for the weekend

After everyone went to bed I took my g/f's Cruze to the touch-free wash, it was due

I simply pre-washed with the IK Foam Pro 12 filled with Griot's Garage Brillant Shine snow foam, gave it a long dwell time and got in line...behind a Chevy SS who snuck in infront of me, no worries, more dwell time

I'll check it out in the morning, might have to hit the tires & rims to even things out

We had some rain yesterday, so I gave the FJ a wipe over with Ech2o, even the wheels. Also decided to put something on the tyres, 303 Aerospace Protectant this time, spayed it on and let it soak in for a good half hour, then wiped off the excess and evened it out.

Removed the dust from the Qashqai with NV Boost, it really wasn't that bad, but I want to use it up so I can justify putting some Boost V2 in my next order, people keep talking about it. Also touched up the tyres with Autoglym Instant Tyre Dressing.

Looks great as always - always love that blue!

I just used Boost V2 last week about 24hrs after a wash. I had honestly forgotten about it but was pleasantly surprised. Very easy to use as a spray on, two towel wipe. I can't comment on durability or water behavior as the vehicle is now garaged for two weeks. I'll have to check to see how it's doing once back and assuming some fall weather has kicked-in by then.

I have started my winter cleaning and prep on my little car and I did some experimenting I had been wanting to do. After my disappointing experience with a NanoSkin mitt last year I really hadn’t intended to buy any more synthetic clay products but so many people were happy with the Griot's synthetic clay I tried one a few months back. I like it and think it does a decent job. My only complaint is it feels fine on horizontal surfaces but the grip feels awkward to me on vertical surfaces. The new TRC Ultra Clay Scrubber seems to be getting popular so I decided to try one of them as well , and I figured a comparison of the 2 synthetics with some old school clay might be interesting. I used some clay from an old kit, the 2 synthetics, and various claying lubricants and I think I duplicated what most of the forum folks have found, old school clay outperforms synthetics on tougher bonded contaminants. The TRC and Griot's both worked great on lightly contaminated surfaces and the TRC was much more comfortable to me on vertical surfaces as I suspected it would be, plus I like the way they wrapped the "clay" media up one edge only so you have a safe edge when working up against trim. I used detailing sprays as well as ONR and N-914 at WW dilutions with the clay, plus diluted Hyper Wash with the synthetics and I like the feel of car soap with the synthetics better than the WW/QD solutions

I guess my takeaway here is that there is still a place in my arsenal for old school clay, and assuming they last longer than the Nanoskin mitt, I have a use for synthetics as well. If I had to choose between the Griot's and TRC offerings I would have to give the win to TRC for price and versatility

A touch-free wash before C&C this morning. Once there I topped up the Pirelli's w/TWHS graphene tire dressing.

It's factory fresh for TUNING DAY

Ok

With 2 more doors and the hatch completed I have decided to give the edge to the Griots synthetic clay rather than the TRC for a couple of reasons

The Griot’s sponge definitely takes off crap on the lower door and rocker panels that the TRC sponge won’t remove

The other is very subjective but even with the awkwardness I perceive on lower vertical surfaces the Griots sponge seems to “stick” to the paint more than the TRC sponge and to me it has much more tactile feedback, which I consider vital in any claying process

The TRC sponge skipped over crap that the Griots subsequently removed and I didn’t even feel what it missed until the panel was dried and baggy tested

After I did the baggy test and went back over the same area with the Griot’s sponge I could easily detect most of the contaminants the TRC sponge missed, and with the Griots sponge I could get most of them off, and then get the stragglers with the actual clay

Cleaned the engine compartment on the Jaguar. For the interior, applied the Geist Leather preservative, (Step 2) to the seats.

Non-slippery, matte finish, supple. So far, so good. Next up is the Dye and friction blocker this coming weekend.
