8km walk took me 2 hours it's nice apart from the idiot driver's that don't want to share the road.

Scored a perfect round at trivia tonight. Unfortunately, a few other teams did as well. It was a picture round to identify the movie depicted by the Peeps diorama.

MisterSnoop - That picture round is awesome! I can’t guess them all but that’s pretty clever!

First grass cut of the year. It will grow like mad now!!

Yup. Did mine on Wednesday, and walking out to the shed tonight I thought: "Well son of b!tch. It will need cutting again tomorrow."

But............ Better than having to blow snow. :)

Yesterday I cut down the dead ornamental pear tree in the corner of my backyard.

This variety was called 'Edgewood', a medium tree that had a really nice spectrum of autumn color. This tree was a main focal point in my garden and one of the remaining specimens after I renovated the yard last year. Sadly, this tree never really took off after the last winter. I have no real idea why it died, it just slowly went backwards to the point where there was no return.

This is from October 2020 (just behind the white bench seat) -

And this from April 2022 -

I spent all summer hoping it would bounce back, sadly that was not to be and which lead me to cutting it down.

The first thing I did was to remove as much material from the main branches as possible, with both my chainsaw and my new pole pruner. The Fiskars PowergearX Telescopic Tree Pruner is pretty decent to use, cutting smaller branches to reduce the weight of the remaining material.

I then started to drop the main branches using my battery powered Stihl chainsaw.

The MSA 120 managed to cut pretty well, I have two batteries for these tools and used the larger on in total and half of the smaller capacity one. The limitations of the chain size and the lack of stamina meant I had to get out the petrol chainsaw to finish the remaining cuts.

The Stihl 009L is an odd machine. I have had this from new for 20+ years, these saws are much different design to regular Stihl chainsaws. The top mounted handle allow for one handed operation which leads me think it was more of an arborist saw. Despite the small footprint of this saw, the engine is unusually large at 41cc and has more than enough grunt.

Tree gone, I also had to dig up the Loropetalum to make room for the new tree.

The replacement tree is Canadian Maple called "Autumn Blaze", prized for it's stunning red Autumn/Fall display. I had this specimen selected and held aside for a number of months now so I got the pick of the bunch. (I sell these for a living)

A nice big hole was dug, I'm blessed with beautiful soil in my yard. Not an ounce of clay to be found.

Loropetalum relocated and the new tree staked -

I will most likely add a couple of shrubs behind it, undecided on what to use yet. Lets hope I have better luck with this tree to allow a nice shady spot to sit on that bench.

Replacing a gob of stuff on my Chevy. 17 years figured why not after I blew a hose and cooler followed.

Should be brand new minus injectors and engine.

Fixing a dent in the hood and some clear coat over a door, pretty small area so doing it myself. New bumpers and some new exhaust parts. Cleaning up wiring harness and replacing all the hoses i can in the engine bay. Hope to clean the frame and paint it with POR15. Should pretty it up pretty nice. Won’t be able to ever let the truck go now.

Once that’s done hoping to polish it and put a coating on…not sure what yet but have some I need to use up.

Need to have a word with the neighbours and see if they mind you cutting the over growth on your fence line.

I think they like having the overgrown material on the fence, it helps to hide the crop of weed they have growing it pots. That stuff reeks.

You got it!

Every Autumn has been accompanied by a strange aroma outside. Took me many years to figure out what it was. I have a very strong sense of smell so I can pick up scents that others can't. The aroma is very pungent, I could smell it when I drove into our street the other week.

He got busted many years ago for growing it and from what I can gather, he is just cultivating it for personal use and not selling it.

Apart from it being illegal, it's the smell that annoys me most as it seems to float indoors as well.

Cam and crank yesterday, core plugs today.
Hopefully next weekend will be pistons.

A couple of days ago: I went to watch the LA Clippers host the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA play in game. Unfortunately we lost and our season came to an end.
We’ll be back next season.

Vacation Project Number Five - Power Reel installation.

I have a extreme hatred of untidy, messy cables and hoses.............it drives me nuts!

You know the sort of thing..............

Ideally, I would have preferred a metal style reel, but these are just too far out of the budget for what they are. My choice ended up being this Australian made Recoila Retractable Reel. I like that when ready, I can add the compressed air version and have them match. Form is equally important as function.

A blank wall and a power outlet right below made the perfect spot for this addition.

The box contains a template for easily locating the drilling points.

I chose to mount this up high to keep it out of the way, doing so requires the 'mouth piece' to be relocated to the lower section. This is done by removing a few screws, popping the black plastic mouth piece out, removing the plastic stopper, feeding the cord and mouth piece down into the lower position before snapping into place and replacing the screws.

Now, I had some help with the drilling portion of this project. The two brackets need 8 holes and 8 dyna bolts to hold them position. This is a concrete wall so a Hilti hammer drill is needed for this job. Let's just say the installation was somewhat testing, although for a change it was me who was calmer and less stressed.

If/when I do this again, I think I'll mount the reel to a cleat and attach the cleat to the wall instead for a smoother installation.

Either way, it's installed and should work quite well.

Degreed cam, checked piston to valve clearance and finished assembling shortblock. Slowly coming together.

Hopefully the Kwahi and George experience pans out next year. Like them both as players.
