What did you do today non-detailing related?

Blaupunkt, haven't heard that name in forever. That used to be the German radio that came in German cars here, don't remember if you could get them aftermarket here or not, don't remember ever seeing any other equipment like TV's or home stereo. Or did Blaupunkt die and someone bought the name and now is sticking it on various things, like they did with Westinghouse here in the US?

A lot of Holdens had Blaupunkt head units from the factory, I think I still have one in a tub in the garage, it's a 6 cd stacker, it's got to be worth at least $5. I don't know why I haven't thrown it out. Looks just like this one.

So, I have found a new rabbit hole..............home audio. I tend to watch/listen to music via Youtube, so I get both sight and sound into the mix. I've been running that through a basic Sony soundbar and wireless sub, before switching to an early 2000's Panasonic Hi-Fi system, both via an analog connection.

This sort of thing, oh how 2000's that thing looks today...............

I actually decided to try this for TV audio after being underwhelmed with the Sony soundbar. After realizing how much I value good audio and the amount of music I listen to, I decided to spend a bit of money on an upgrade.

But in doing so, I needed to buy the correct cable. My TV has a combined 3.5mm aux jack/optical output, something I only discovered the other night. So, I ordered the cable in anticipation of the new gear. That cable arrived today and out of interest, I connected it to the Sony soundbar..............

Wow, what a difference an optical cable can make to the sound output of a sound system!

Of course, I naturally wonder why I spent so much on upgrades when the single cable probably would have been sufficient. But............I have another use for the sound bar, the old Panasonic not so much.

As much as anything, this bloody cable has made me super pumped for the new stuff coming!

My Mum bought herself a new tv for her bedroom in the post Christmas sales, the old one wouldn't pick up all the HD channels. The new one is a Blaupunkt, 32" and only $197. So it was my job to do the set up, what fun. Choose the wifi network and put the password in, nope, can't find that network, forget the network and try again, still nope. So I reboot the router and start all over, now it can't find any network, screw this, I do a factory reset on the tv, and leave it off for an hour. Start again, all done in less than 5 minutes, everything up and running perfectly. So frustrating.

Problem 2, the soundbar she bought with it doesn't fit on the tv shelf she has, and she doesn't want me to mount it on the wall, so I swap the PC speakers (with subwoofer) that I use on my garage tv. Fits, neatly, and sounds good. I mount the soundbar to the tv shelf in the garage, level and centred. But the cable that comes with the soundbar doesn't fit the tv I have in the garage, ah, but both have optical connections, and somewhere in my box of miscellaneous cables I have an optical cable, if I can just find it. Glad I'm a cable hoarder, found and installed. Done.

3 hours+, but at least Mum is happy.

Would you believe I have just gone through the same thing.

My Dad decided he wanted a smart TV with Netflix capabilities, so he went and bought a new Sony on Boxing Day.

I arrived to see the thing left in the box, with the expectation I would set it up for him. Unlike you, I managed to get it hooked up with minimum of stress. But.......................

No one knows how the work the thing but me. Instead of defaulting to what the TV was on when it was turned off, each time its turned on you have to select the output, which for two 70 years old's, that's just all too hard for them, even after I put paint pen on the two, yes two, buttons they had to push.

I have the same problems with phone for them. All they want is the thing to be a phone, and yet its made so deliberately overcomplicated for people like that. Next time they get new phones, its NO MORE APPLE products for them! Great for those who use the thing all day, but needlessly complicated and difficult for people who didn't grow up with this stuff. Not everyone can process that sort of thing, and because they can't, they keep pressing buttons until something bad happens. Ask me how I know this.

And so, I have the same complaint about the bloody TV, why can't it just be a TV? Oh, and now I'm paying for a Netflix account that I have no need for, and my Dad won't ever figure out to use it himself!

Oh, and I have no idea how much that new TV cost, but considering the size of the thing, I would imagine it wasn't cheap. What is cheap though is the sound output from the TV itself. Clearly Sony know what they are doing, I'm sure they are more than happy to sell you a sound bar to go with the TV. As it stands, the sound is so tinny and thin that, even the 15 year old TV it replaced sounded better. I'm going to donate my old sound bar once my new system arrives.

Mum's 83, but she's pretty good with technology, she worked with computers till she retired at 79. She regularly streams Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, she's even got a thing for Turkish tv shows, don't ask, she doesn't understand a word, but reads the subtitles.

I know what you mean about TV sound, all the new super thin flat screens have rubbish sound, but then there is nowhere for decent speakers to go on them. When I was looking for a new TV for our media room, I was looking at a 55" Sony TV and soundbar, but the sales guy said the 55" LG TV was better, but the Sony soundbar was good, and the LG TV was cheaper. I compared the picture quality, played with the remotes, and decided on the LG. A few months later the LG won a comparison of about 20 different 55" TVs in Choice Magazine, so I was pretty happy with that.

I used to have a full surround sound system at the old house in Sydney, but the layout of the media room up here wouldn't allow me to run speaker cables to the back speakers, and I didn't want to buy a whole new Bluetooth speaker setup, I figured I'd try the soundbar out for a while, it's good enough, has a surround setting, but it's not true surround of course, but it's good quality sound, and certainly loud enough.

When we set up a tv in another room we decided to try those apple HomePod mini. Hooked them up through Apple TV (which is what we use mostly). Got two for stereo. Been very impressed with the sound. Easy to hook up and (knock wood) have been seamless in use.

People don’t realize how much a difference the cables we use make a difference. Same with connecting our music through Bluetooth…. Convenient but atrocious sounding.

Same if you listen from a CD to streaming. Sad how music quality in general has fallen

I watched a video short on TFL's YouTube channel the other day, comparing an 08 MB GL450 with a 24 GLS450, $8k v $92k, one of the things they showed on the old one was how clunky it is to put CDs in behind the fascia, but didn't show anything on the new one because there's nowhere to put CDs in the new one. So it's either radio, USB, or streaming I guess. Premium sound system I'm sure, but lousy sources.

I was looking at replacing my Kenwood head unit in the FJ after a firmware update removed Android Auto from it, with no warning, but all the new ones don't have the ability to play CDs or DVDs, so I think I'll pass, even though I mostly play music off a USB.

I mowed the lawn again today, nothing exciting about that, but seeing a couple of neighbours doing the same, I noticed one guy was doing it in a different order. So I thought I'd ask what you guys do.

I do the edges then mow the lawn, I used to have an evil whipper snipper (edger) that was difficult to start, and I didn't want mow the lawn and not be able to do the edges, leaving it looking like a half done haircut. Also the catcher or mulcher on the mower deals with all the clippings from the the edger while you mow.

The guy up the road mows, then does the edges, leaving clippings all over the path and the lawn that he then uses his blower to "clean up".

So what order works for you?

So when you do this for a living, you learn how to put things in order to best utilize your time and prevent doing things twice. In other words, improve your efficiency and time management. And every job is different, so you get into order for each property.

1- Edges are ALWAYS first. Why? Because cutting the edges makes mess, which is not collected when it cuts like your lawn mower does.

2 - I then get the leaf blower and blow the edge clippings and any other debris/leaf litter onto the lawn. This includes street gutters and patio areas ect.

3 - I then mow. This also picks up the material I have blown onto the lawn from the above step.

If I'm careful, I can often avoid getting the leaf blower out again after cutting the lawn, which means more time saved.

I often see so-called "professional's" screw this up, as in they blow large amounts of lawn clippings and debris into the street and leave it there. Not only is that completely lazy workmanship, it's also less efficient. If they moved their steps around, they would leave the property sooner and in a neater state. And by not leaving grass all over the street, the neighbors wouldn't be complaining or labeling all lawn mowing contractors as sloppy hacks.

Spent the better half of an hour reading up on the R390 GT1.

I took off my detailing hat and put on my geek hat. I took my robotics team to our first competition of the year. They placed second and qualified for the state’s championship. Looks like this will be my life for the next 6 weeks.

The soundbar I added to my garage TV setup lasted about a week, it was just too annoying. The sound was flat, it had no base even though it's supposed to have two built-in subwoofers, and it has no in built memory, so I had to re-enter whatever base and treble settings i use every time I turn it on. So I dug out my old Sherwood A/V receiver and a couple of big speakers I had sitting unused. I spent $28 on timber to make a stand for the receiver to sit in, it's in the garage, so it doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. I also added a screw to hang my Georg Jensen barometer on. I also have a Bluray DVD player hooked up, and Chromecast so I can stream detailing videos.
