Good Day Fellow Aficionados:

I was just watching the "Mecum Auto Auction" which frequently auctions off $100,000+ cars. Obviously, most have flawless finishes and are detailed to perfection. Any idea as to what products they use as the final layer to the finish.

Thanks for the insight

It's all in the prep work my friend not the final layer (LSP). Btw, welcome to the forum.

I understand the "prep work" but they do use a final layer of something....what might that be?

And a good day to you!

I don't think there's any specific product they use as the only requirement is to leave it looking wet.

Richard touched on prep and this is so very important as the last step product portrays the surface it's applied over.

I have polished a surface and it was so smooth and shinny a spray wax make it look like wet paint. Collinite 845 is one of the most inexpensive waxes I've ever used and this is what my 1999 Dodge Dakota looks like.

That is the question everybody asks the real professional "what kind of wax do you use" my answer4 for years has been the same it's a process not a product

YUP!!!!!!!!!!!!! All in the prep. Some show cars can have countless hours of polishing with a $15 wax on it and look amazing!

:iagree:That $15 wax is to protect the shine that is already there.

So NO ONE knows what specific product(s) they use.....on a $100,000++ car it would be interesting to know. If my google skills give me an answer I'll report back.

thanks anyways

There are many waxes out there ranging from $10 to $40,000 and all of them have been used on the vehicles you speak of. The point everyone is making here is that the look isn't in the wax used, it's in the proper polishing job!

Bingo.

FussMan, you're missing the point.

Most products out there IMO differ only slightly. Some more then others. But I think it really comes down to a few things

1)What condition the paint is in, some LSP's will look better then others on certain color and condition finishs
2)Personal preference, some products are just easier to work with so someone might choose that, or they like the look of one wax/sealant over another.

Thanks all, I do understand the point you are making but my question wasnt how they got the cars to look so great; it was more a question of curiousity about what specific product(s) an owner of a $100,000, $200,000, $300,000++ uses on a their car. These owners have alot on the line when they show their cars. I'd even be curious on their tire dressing choice ect ect.

If you ever watch the Mecom Auto Auction you might get the curiousity bug as well.

Til next time..thanks again

fussman, there is no one product they use. some might use poorboys, some might use zymol, some might use pinnacle.

your question is something like this.

what kind of bats do pro baseball player use.......all different kinds. you think someone who uses the same exact bat as alex rodriguez or barry bonds are going to hit like them? NO

why? because the talents, hard work and abilities of those baseball player got them to where they are today and could probably hit really great with a junk bat.

if I gave you a PC with the most expensive wax and let some of the guys on here that are good a PC with turtle wax they probably would get better results.

Great point...if you ever watch Barrett Jackson Auction they use Mothers and Meguiars products right before they cross the auction line! So that goes to show you, a $100,000 car can shine with a $10 quick detailer, of course it depends on prep before but those cars you see at the auctions are not in perfect shape by any means.

Meghan's right...

I've worked on the auction block at 3 different Barrett-Jackson auctions and on TV the cars always looks so good with glossy, show car quality looking paint but in reality the majority of the cars that went over the auction block that inspected and took pictures of were swirled-out messes.

I would say the quality of the finish on cars at these auctions has improved dramatically and I credit education via discussion forums and training classes for at least a part of the improvements.

The place to stand at these auctions is where the cars come out of the auction tents... usually if the sun is out you'll have time to really inspect the paint and see for yourself what the true condition is as compared to what you see on TV

A show car finish starts with a clean car and then all the necessary correction and polishing steps needed to work the finish up to a state of flawlessness. At that point the wax, paint sealant or coating becomes frosting on the cake. Cake is good, frosting just makes it better...

There are detailers at these locations, I'm pretty sure Mothers sets up detailing facilities at the Barrett-Jackson auctions and at the last auction I went to I watched the guys using the Flex 3401 to buff out the paint on some really choice cars.

:)

Why don't you read some posts by Todd Helme, Barry Theale and Todd Cooperider (et al)? Those are the guys who are doing your 100+ K cars. Todd just posted about a detail he did on some very rare and expensive cars and one on a Buggatti Veyron - at a cool 2.4 mil, the Veyron should qualify for "what the pro's use on expensive cars". Here's the link: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...atti-veyron-super-sport-paint-correction.html

So, what did Todd use? Lemme see. Meg's M105, M205, makita rotary, Megs DA, Meg's Ultimate Protectant, M40 Rubber Dressing, Gold Class Leather Cleaner and Conditioner and Meg's Ultimate Wax.

On the detail of several very high end collector cars, Todd used many of the same Meg's products along with some Menzerana and Blackfire sealant. Here's the link: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...trip-wintery-wonderland-rare-automobilia.html

So, the answer to your question is they are using the exact same products available to you.
