What do you guys use for Headlight Restorations? Like besides kits that are made for it....wouldn't a polish essentially be the same thing?

I use the 3m kit. it has 4 different grits of sandpaper and 2 polishes with 2 different foam pads. However yes you can make them 100 percent better by sanding and buffing with the stuff that you already have.

I got the Wolfgang Kit as a present but before that I was using 1500 grit polish and a 3 inch orange/yellow cutting pads and it worked great. The only problem is that you have to keep adding sealant before it wears out. I have not had headlights bad enought that I have had to wetsand. I have been meaning to try that Urethane mix on mine or maybe some Opti-coat.

I recently used Mothers Headlight restoration kit. It comes with a special polishing pad for use with a drill, polish, and 4 grades of sandpaper. It worked pretty good.

I had tried just polishes with foam using a DA before but the sandpaper plus using the drill seemed to help a lot.

Had great success with 3M's kit. Used it on two vehicles.

Maybe you guys didn't understand the question. (hah) I know there are kits out there, personally I own the diamondite one and it works great. What i am asking is if you can use m105 and 205 instead of the polishes those kits come with. Essentially the polishes they come with have one polish with more abrasives and one with less, so you can finish down the lens properly. Wouldn't that work?

If not too bad I'll use the Wolfgang 3 step system with a drill adaptor plate/pads.
After step 1 if there is still oxidation I'll use 600/1000/1500/2000/2500 (ea 500 grit progression is made to remove previous grit scratches is what I learned here). Next Megs M85; then Menz 106ff; small plate w/white pad on Makita @1500 then the Wolfgang step#3 Sealant.

you can get rid of some light build up with the M105 and then go over it with the M205 for a nice clear finish, Wont work with extremely bad lights.

If I can away w/ just using compound & polish I will. Sometimes I will have to do a little hand sanding  using a sheet of 2k just to get rid of some stubborn spots.

thanks, you gave me the answer i was looking for.

M105/M205 here also !

orange/white pads spot pads. (CCS)

then either opti-seal/opti-coat/UPGP/rejex

105/205 or even U-Compound/U-Polish...then Plastx.

Using LC Orange, White and maybe (if needed) a yellow.

Does it come out as well as a sanding procedure...no. BUT, with some lamps, that aren't 'real bad' the polish method works.

i just did 2 sets for my parents i went and spent 10$ got diffrent grit sand paper *wet or dry* . started with 650 then 1000 then 2000. *on the really bad set* the other just did 1000/2000 followed by m105 then m205 followed by wax. they look brand new first time doing it.

Hmmm, I never thought about trying regular polishes/compounds for headlights. Would it be recommended to use old pads for this? Or could I get away with using my normal pads as long as I washed them well after? My headlights are starting to haze around the top and inner edges (basically around the hood) and there is a series of fine horizontal scratches about an inch long along the vertical inside edge near my hood (basically seems like wind scratches to me, nothing actually rubbed to create them). I'm thinking I'll try the wolfgang twins and then would the WGDGPS work on them? This would be a test to see how well it works because my girlfriend's 2005 Murano REALLY needs the headlights done bad.

I use M105 and 205 after sanding. Then i seal with the Urethane mix to seal. Everything comes out great. The 105 and 205 are part of my process.

Do you wetsand by hand? Or are you using a machine with a sanding disc?

If needed I will wet sand with 800g or 2000g. Depending on how bad they are.. Then I use Menzerna power gloss and then super finish.. Sometimes its not bad and I can just use power finish and seal. I use the BuffPro polisher with a wool pad.
