I'm using sonus leather cleaner on a microfiber applicator pad on a black leather 2001 lexus 430. I just got the car and I'm sure the leather has never been cleaned.

And I see this on the applicator. I'm paranoid. Is this dirt or could I be pulling off ink??

It looks like grayish, darkish brown. So somewhere in the middle. Would it definitely be black if it's ink coming off?

Sure looks like dirt to me but I've seen worse.

It's a 2001 and it's never been cleaned so 14 years of dirt, grime, oils and who knows what else. I think your safe.

I would do a Test Spot on an area that you know is already clean, like a vertical section that does not get any wear and tear

That looks to be dirt and grime from a potentially a "clear"coated leather seat though if it was "single" stage leather seat that microfiber would be black if the cleaner was strong enough.

"Single Stage Leather" ?

I have never heard that one, tell me more

"Single" stage leather as I call it is leather that does not have a protective "clear" plastic coating like modern day leather therefore the dye/color in leather will bleed if you use too strong of a cleaner
Unlike "clear" plastic coated leather where you can potentially clean it with a strong cleaner thus will only remove the dirt and not the color unless a area of the "clear" was removed

I knew what you meant...just never heard those specific terms used

I am not convinced that the coating on newer leather is actually clear at all

I believe it is often tinted, especially on darker colored leathers

Thanks guys...and I think it was messing with my mind because I wondered if I wS seeing the seat get lighter! That's a great idea to go over a clean inconspicuous spot to see if additional color comes off.

I sure would never have known those otherwise pretty seats had so much filth on them!!

I use those terms to make it easier for me, and everyone to understand/remember though you may be right on the protective coatings begin tinted to give the leather a darker/better coloring of the material though they don't bleed like a "single" stage leather would

By the way, it wS the vertical part of a back seat. Prob the least used spot in the car. I can't even imagine what the front seats will be like!
