I see on alot of detail website's that state their pricing is based on vehicle in "Average Condition" (I also have this statement on mine). I was wondering what your perception is as "Average Condition"?

Sorry tried to upload a couple of picture to show what I thought is "Average Condition", but couldn't get it to upload???

Thanks,
Greg

lol, that's a discussion I have with customers daily... No two opinions appear to be the same..

In the town I reside it seems that average condition is an absolute, completely, swirled out mess! Well the cars that have more than 85% paint anyhow......

You guys are brutal :joking:

I really dont have a good example but maybe compared to a rental car? Pretty sad if the rental fleet looks better than a privately owned car.

I don't know about "average", but when a customer tells me their car is "not bad" or "i take really good care of it" it usually ends up a nightmare. On the other hand when they say it's in bad shape it usually is a cream puff. Go figure :)

My prices are based on car size really not how bad the paint is. But I do charge more for dark cars. The only thing I base price on by looks is interior.

I approach this subject matter mathematically...

I.
The definition of "Average":
1.) Refers to the sum of numbers divided by n. (Also called the mean average.)
2.) Central tendancy...A measure of the middle value of a data set.

The interior is where I find the biggest challenge judging average condition.

Is 1 or 2 small stains, food and other debris on the carpet (takes 45 mins. to vacuum), sticky stuff in the cup holders (taking 20 mins. to clean), paper trash, shoe makes on the door panels considered average?

Is it very minor cleaning in and out within an hour average?

How long is to long to spend in the interior before it's Not Average?

I know it's subjective to each of us, what's average to one detailer, could be extremely trashed to another.

The exterior I find much easier to judge condition.

I'll try to add pictures.

Thanks everyone for the comments!

That is a loaded question that greatly depends on your market, prices, clientele, and type of vehicle you deal with. I would say for me "average" condition is a vehicle I can make look good on the interior in about 2-3 hours of work, and can remove 50-70% of paint defects in around 1-2 hours of AIO polishing on the exterior. That is me however, and is based on my packages, average customers, time spent, etc.. This will vary greatly depending on who you are and what you regularly work on.

However, it often depends on whether you are buying or selling.
