what is everyone doing to prepare for Sandy ?

It looks like it is passing east of us but has been overcast most of day. The rain band is about 60 to 70 miles east of us.

Got batteries, extra food and water. Took most of the halloween decorations down. Put 2 empty trashcans in the back of the pickup and secured them down with straps. Cleaned off the deck and brought the plants in.

Unfortunatly I don't have a generator. I live in ALexandria VA and it seems like all it takes is a strong breeze for the the power to out. I should have bought a generator a month ago, but it's one of those things that cost a ton of money and hardly ever gets used. I think I'll hit up Harbor Freight in another month, after we recover from this storm and get a cheap generator. If I can power my fridge, have a few lights, run a small space heater and maybe charge up the portable CD player or my son's DS, I'd be happy. Ugh! Why didn't I buy one?!

Anyway, I hope you all are safe and sound over the next 3 - 4 days.

Well...Us Philly guys are happy to see NYC take a hit when it comes along(ok, just kidding...I think)! I only wish this could be snow, we were ripped on the almost no snow totals last year and my Snow Blower is getting lonely! We will be praying that no one has to lose there life from this thing though, saw the reports from the Carribean on the news.

Let's add one more name to the mix:

Stay safe you guys.

I guess I am lucky living here in cali. We never get anything that bad. We have fires, but they have never reached my part of town.

How many gallons of gas do generators use a day? Do you guys have a supply to run it 24/7 for like two weeks? Cause thats what I would do if I lived there.

Mine uses about 5 gallons a day and I have 15 gallons on hand....:props:

Bobby, SHU,I don't even know how much mine uses, haven't used it for over a year and a half.
Took me two hours just to dig it out of storage. Fired up on the second pull.

Spent 6 days or so w/o power with Irene - mostly at a luxury hotel...the only one with vacancies in my immediate area.

EDIT: let me rephrase - after the old lady invited extended family, I went back to the house and stayed the last 2 days alone in the dark.

I like the idea of generators, but you do have gasoline in the house which is unsafe to me. I dont get why somebody has not thought of creating a generator with a solar pannel or ones that could run off bio fuels like leaves or other items, we do have alot around here right now

...but you do have gasoline in the house...

Wrong answer my friend.
I drain all gas cans and equipment after use and add to vehicle gas tank.

Former desert dweller that can't stand the smell of gas or exhaust fumes...but diesel exhaust doesn't bother me.

you might do that, but I bet alot of people dont as many want to save it for the next storm

I agree.
Gas just makes me nauseous, nothing worse than driving the ragtop behind someone with a vehicle that's running rich.
