What is keeping u from coating your car instead of sealant/wax?

Is that the stuff that has Kryptonite as the active ingredient? Or am I mixing it up with something from CG's?

Gosh I hope not. Well if I get weak as the UPS guy walks up I know it does. haha

It seemed like the most goof proof of the bunch and I didn't want something "permanent" so I'll give it a go. :)

Ok Ok...no one has mentioned the elephant in the room so I will. So fess up guys...most continously apply wax and sealants as an excuse to escape the house. :autowash:

I have my 01 Pathfinder Opti Coated and my 08 M Roadster with sealant topped with wax. So, I have one of each. Both vehicles have Opti Coat on the wheels and they are so easy to clean. Initially, I decided to skip the coatings for my BMW because it lives in the garage and I thought Carnuba would look better. However, now that I have one Opti Coated vehicle I plan on doing the BMW. It seems Opti Coat gives the finish a darker and "newer" look. I can't explain it, but it made my truck look great. An Opti Coat finish reminds me of what a great trim dressing can do to older plastic. I notice a revived look. It also seems to make paint look darker (richer - for lack of a better word) or sparkle. We know coating black plastic trim with OC will make the trim look darker and newer, I think it has a similar effect on clear coat. That is why I did one of my vehicles, because I wanted to see if I liked it. That being said, I just polished/waxed/sealed my BMW a few months ago and I have some traditional waxes and sealants I planned to use that I have not opened yet. I won a huge Poor Boys kit at Detail Fest with bottles of almost all of their polishes/waxes/sealants. I want to try some of these before OC my BMW. So, I think I have one more round of stripping, waxing, and sealing this car with traditional products before I re-polish and OC it. However, I still plan on waxing on top of the OC, as I already own the products, and like experimenting and waxing. I don't see a reason why you can't wax on top of OC, as the durability may be less, but all us Auto Geeks wax our cars frequently anyway. Mainly, I wanted to try it on one vehicle to see if I liked it and it turns out I think it gives a superior look to traditional products if it's done right. So, I mainly am waiting until my BMW needs attention with a DA again to Opti Coat it.

Oh yeah...and +1 on using OptiCoat on the wheels. So much easier to clean.

1.) The way that Coatings are said to "bond" to a CC paint film.
2.) It is said that with some coatings, one doesn't know where the coating 'ends' and the CC paint film 'begins'.
3.) Total cure-time often vaguely known.
4.) Permanency?
5.) Hardness...Is it relative to the "Pencil hardness test"?
6.) Belief/disbelief in coatings stated resistance to swirls, scratches, etc
7.) Maintenance, removal (if so desired), and re-application methods when, or if, deemed necessary
8.) Hydrophobic vs Hydrophilic
9.) When I "see" some of those who tout these coatings, actually apply one of them, to their personal and prized vehicle(s).

I gotta lot of phobias, I guess.

That's all for now...

I have both. OC requires little maintenance. You only really have to wash and your done. The look is the look. You cant alter it without removing it so you better like it. Better suited to daily drivers and non motor-heads who don't have the time nor desire to maintain the car other than washing it. And yes coatings scratch just as easily if not more than non coated surfaces. It's a myth that costings are scratch resistant in my experiences with them.

If you are anal about your car and you enjoy maintaining it and experimenting with different products then forget about coatings. It's pretty much that simple in so far as making your decision.

Actually noting at all, I have both.

I have both and enjoy experimenting and there's noting stopping me from applying a "coating" then adding a sealant or wax in a few days.

Optimum Opti-Coat 1/2 the hood then seal and wax the other and see who the winner is. If I decide to remove it all it takes in an Orange foam pad and some polish and I'm back to square one...

Many say it's overkill but as long as they're my toys, I can play when them any time I want and any way I want...

I love maintaining my car..it is my time away from stuff...I love my Meguiars Microfiber system and I love my Wolfgang 3.0 sealant and I love my Dodo and I'm sticking to my process

Exactly, it's my down time... I enjoy spending the time waxing my truck... Now if this dang rain would stop I could try out my new Dodo Juice waxes....

It does polish off if you mess up. But, it's not that difficult. I was very nervous about messing up until we used the coatings in Boot Camp in January. Of course, it was not MY corvette but it was very easy to apply and came out great. I guess that's why I love Mike's classes because we get to learn about products and techniques.

I wish they would send Mike around the country doing his detailing class. I know I'd sign up if he made a trip to Chicago!

Just the joy of waxing my car every so often. The advantages of the coatings do interest me though.
You can still do this. It will dumb down the hydrophobic and dust repellancy attributes until the wax wears off, Per Chris OCW lasts a few weeks on OC/OG vice a few months. After a while, I sent my waxes to Corey. I dont miss them!

This is what i deciphered from reading ol' dude from the upstate thread all the way through concerning this issue. Seems that Chris@Optimum was less than forgiving on the hype concerning 2.0. And I was most impressed with his posts.

All in all hand, I will probably go with the opti-seal spray as opposed to the coating.
Old Dude?

Well said regarding use of sealants & waxes over OC. And since it doesnt last as long, Geeks can do it more often if desired. I wouldnt wait to OC, use a light polish and OC now. It will take the ddamage your clear would have endured. Save the Clear NOW!

I did #9 to my vehicles and I admit I am a zealot. NO Coating is permanent if you dont want it to be. I have used and removed OG,OC,G|Techniq C1 and Element 119 System X. All were corrected or removed easily with a polish and a white foam pad.

I love the physical barrier between my clear and the world. IMO you raised great points but IME the protection trumps all potential concerns.
