Bought a 2016 VW Passat used with 13k miles. Thought I could get this stuff off but no luck with normal cleaning products. It is also on thermostat display and vent.

I have not tried any type of plastic cleaners yet in fear of scratching. I can feel the specs on the surface.

I realize pictures are overly large but hopefully that helps someone identify what to do. Thanks in advance for any ideas and advice.

Looks like paint overspray. How it got on your interior I haven't got a clue. Try a clay bar or clay substitute. Rub carefully.

Thanks. It seems I could scrape off a little paint overspray? I tried in a corner but no luck.

Is it possible that is surface damage to the plastic from a previous cleaning product? Especially on that vent knob it looks like some chemical damage or delamination, or perhaps a skin oil residue reaction?

Maybe damage caused by an Air Freshener? Have you tried using a Plastic Polish on the clock and thermostat? Try using an Interior Cleaner on the AC vent.

My guess is it's Armor All Protectant that was sprayed on the dash and not wiped off.

Thats etching from caustic cleaners.

Is that clock pitted or on the surface.feel it with your nail,if it's pitted replacement is your only option. That vent positioner shouldn't cost much but maybe have to buy the whole farm with it.On the climate control just rub some light non abrasive polish should remove it.

I appreciate all the tips. I have not tried any type of polish or plastic cleaner yet. The Vent and clock are all part of one farm of two vents and the clock. I could not tell if it was pits or on the surface for sure but I am leaning towards on the surface. I guess at this point I will try some plastic polish of some type and see what happens.

I assume Meguiar's plastx is the way to go?

The Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish would be a great product to use. Meguiars Plastx Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish - clean & polish all clear plastic panels and convertible top windows.

I'd guess silicone overspray. Happened to me using 303. I've tried APC's to PlastX to polishes/compounds. It's etched, needs replaced. Mine at least.

Merry Christmas!

I found an extremely old bottle of Mother's Plastic Polish after a lot of shaking I put it to the test. No luck at all on actual vent but I think I got pretty good results on clock and temp display. I had to polish pretty hard but I think I can live with it now. I realize the edges need to be worked on better but I was scared of scratching bezel and such. I will do a better tape job next time. I was just using a microfiber to do this.

Any tools to make this job easier? Will Meguiars PlastX or something else work better? Any other suggestions to try now that it seems to not be etched on the clear parts anyways.

Try a sock and turn it inside out might give you a little more bite compared to a micro.
