Mine are stainless steel. I use Mr. Clean Original Magic Eraser (that's right the little white squares used in the kitchen). Mr. Clean works wonders on the black deposits inside the tips. I polish up after with Mother's Billet Polish or Optimum Metal Polish (the polish is not the most important part). I personally prefer to coat mine with Permanon as it makes subsequent clean ups much easier (Permanon doesn't let almost everything stick to it and not affected by the heat).
