What is the point of taping the edges?

I commonly see people taping the edges when buffing, what is the point in that? and if so tapping should paint tape be use? Thanks!

From what I gather, the paint tends to be thinner in those areas, taping helps prevent burning through.

Use the same painters tape that you use for masking emblems.

If you don`t pay attention when buffing and run your buffer clockwise into a edge insted of running the buffer clockwise away from the edge, you can remove to much paint. The tape just keeps you away from the edges that you can couse damage to.

I always try to compare detailing to a human body. So "Everyone" can understand.

Here it goes:

"You might be walking and bump your leg/arm no big deal. However imagine if you bump your knee or elbow? Ouch!" It's a sensitive area. So are the corner/edges of a car.

However one might bruise. But on a car paint "bruising" would lead to paint removal, pissed customer, having to fix the damage you caused. When a thin piece of tape could have prevented all this.

Great article on taping off.

For any corners you can line up the tape and if you have to rip the tape to get covered what you need. If you can be more specific we can better help.
