What is the worst way you have seen a car cleaned?

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit after reading some of these...
 
Flashback, I was 14 and cleaned my Dad's old '64 Dodge Polara with dish towels and Comet, it had sat under a tree for years and never been washed, Dad bought it to drive around the farm on.

This weekend, I was watching The Karate Kid (I know I know,). Miyagi made Daniel-san wash and wax all the cars on his lot remember? I watched Daniel-san and was like "oh!, ouch! ooof! no he didn't!!"

Just pull up to any drive through car wash and watch those octopus flapping hang down fabric strips grind the dirt they collect in to every proceeding car.

The first five cars the place washes after the car wash was new are OK, the remaining 5 million cars' paint gets scratched.

About five years ago I saw a drive through car wash with a $3 wash sale. I drove our Black shinny Honda Accord through like an idiot to save $3 and , was physically sickened to see the severe scratches on my trunk and car after this wash!!

The above arn't the worst but it sure is not the way to wash a car.
 
The worst way I've seen a car washed is the way we do it at the dealership where I work. Long handled brushes, one bucket, same wash water used on several cars. Now given, I do what I can - rinse out the brushes frequently, change the wash water when it gets dirty, and we do have a grit guard in the bucket, but it really is sad. I'm so glad I know better than to do that to my car. But most people (those who are buying new cars and those who are having their cars serviced) are like "Free wash, oh boy!" So if that's what they want, that's what they get. Of course you know both the managers and the salesmen and the service advisers want the cars done that way because it's faster than doing it the right way and they can get the car back to the customer quicker. Whatever. :dunno:

There's a local tunnel o' swirl that charges $25 for a "Premium wash, towel dry, and hand wax!" service.

The cars go through the tunnel, come out on the other side where about 5-8 people swarm it with what looks like bar mops. Then they spray it down via those garden pesticide sprayers with what I hope is some sort of spray wax. After it's all said and done they attack the next car with the same rags.

I have to hand it to the guy though. On a given sunny day it's totally packed. Hard to believe people not only pay that much to have their cars defiled, but wait in line to do so.
 
At a car show, I watched a guy prep his truck with Windex and paper towels.....the whole truck. :eek: He was careful enough to set the towels on the tires instead of the ground when he was spraying on the Windex. :rolleyes:

You would think a 'car guy' would know a little better.:dunno:


Here in snow country, you will always see people using a shop broom to sweep the snow off of cars and then go back to using it on the garage floor. Dealers are great for this. Some people even use shovels to clear the snow from vehicles.:doh:

I was pretty mortified when I watched a "hand wash" worker dunk a long-handled brush in a bucket, scrub a wheel and wheel well, and then immediately scrub the back panel of the truck.
 
There are two people in my neighborhood using foam window cleaner and paper towels.....
 
I see people at work cleaning their car by spraying it with the fire hose, then drying it with either a synthetic chamois or sometimes a squeegee!!!

Their cars are always full of swirls, and their reasons for the swirls are that their cars have "crap paint"!!!!!
 
There are some pretty nasty stories here! The worst thing I have ever seen car-care related was a student cleaning their car in the parking lot with a Swiffer (one of those floor cleaning ones with a spray nozzle), setting the pad down on the pavement, picking it up, and repeating until the whole car had been done.

It goes to show that improvisation has limits.
 
I hate to say this in a public forum, but a friend of mine's father cleaned ALL of the snow off of his 2006 Ford F150 Extended cab pickup with a snow shovel...then he was flabbergasted when I quoted him $350 to TRY to fix all of the damage he did. His truck will need some SERIOUS paint work repair.
 
What is wrong with some people. Dont they realize how important a car is . A car is there freedom. With it they can go anyplace they want to go , without it they can only go were there legs carry them. When I was a kid living in Chicago a bus would run every 7 minutes, now your lucky if you see one twice a hour. In the suburbs your lucky if you see a bus at all. With something that important you would think people would take better care on them.

Also, Expert Village has a few videos of a guy named Jose who waxes his Green Pontiac with what looks like Tissue Paper. The noise it makes when he waxes the car could easily make anyone on here go into convulsions

I had to go see those for myself. Did Wax Daddy use the same brush on the carpet as he did on the wheels/wells?. And the "If you missed a spot, just rub it with your fingers like this."

My old boss cleaned his dirty Mercedes with used Pizzeria clothes and windex.
Im talking doughy, saucy, rags with flour and crap on them
Grossest thing I have ever seen. :bash:

Oh yeah, I've seen those. I go back and watch them sometimes just for a laugh! :laughing:

a nice polished car will take you anywhere a scratched/dull/swirl king car can too..... its how you look getting there that counts.....
