What is this stuff on black rubber trim?

Is this residue on the trim or the surface deteriorating?

Looks more like the finish of the trim is wearing away.
I have seen this on many Honda's before and the fix is to replace the trim pieces or some people (depending on the coating) will remove and paint it.
You can try some APC on there to see if anything comes off, but chances are its the trim wearing away over time.
 
I've got this on a two year old Discovery that i valet. got a felling that the guy that did it before i took it on was using some heavy duty TFR, its really damaged the trim.
 
I'm not certain, but if it's rubber trim (most likely since it's by the window), it's probably degraded trim. If so, I doubt it's fixable without replacing it.
 
Yes I agree looks to me like just wear on the trim. You can replace it or paint it and a super cheap alternative is to plasti dip it. Which honestly other than replacing it would probably look best.
 
Thanks for the feedback. It's been bothering me for some time now. It's not worth replacing (07 Mitsubishi endeavor with 140k miles) so before trading it in (lol) I'll just plasti dip them.

I agree with @Trutech74, plastidip it. Works great. We used to do it on Hondas all the time because the trim was a pain to replace and people didn't want to pay for new parts on old daily drivers.
