Take a guess. Answer to follow.
(this is for the US)

i would say 90%. there's like 5 commercial car wash places near where i live. it's literally like one in each block.

I would say 90% goto car washes as most people just don't know what a detail is or can offer and just think they can do it themselves.

Ans: about 97% according to this:

I was a little surprised it was that high, but maybe the survey question was "have you used a commercial car wash at least once in the past year" as opposed to regular users where the commercial car wash is about all they use.

I wonder what percent of car owners have paid for detailing service beyond basic washing? I'd guess that's a fairly small number.

where i usually go to get my car washes many years ago. out of 10 car there's 1 that pay for beyond basic wash.

I got lazy this past winter and just took my car to the local touchless car wash. Its the first time this spring since I owned my car that I had nothing to correct. The paint looked as great once I hand washed it in the spring, as it did last November when I did my annual winter prep with Duragloss 105.

Two things I discovered:
1) if you have a great foundation product you have nothing to fear from touchless car washes.

2) I probably won't be hand washing my car much anymore in the winter.

I would say 10-15% may use a commercial car wash on a regular basis. Maybe 3% of the people wash their own car. Most people probably use a commercial wash for a short period after getting a new car. The other 82% just don't wash their car at all unless it just happens (trip to the dealer, body shop, etc..). When it starts to look "old" (about 2 years), those that can afford it trade it in for a new one, those that can't continue to let their car degrade in appearance.

:iagree:Sounds spot on to me.

I've owned 3 vehicles since I was 18 and none of them have ever gone through an automatic car wash... and this was when I didn't know how to properly wash a car (used one bucket, one mitt, no grit guards, etc.).
