What order do you use things?

I told you I may ask some stupid questions, so here goes I mentioned in my introduction about not having much knowledge as far as all the chemicals/polishes etc. I always notice people put a list of what they used on a vehicle and an order in which they were used it seems.

What do you use first and why? Second and why...so on and so on. Maybe I'm posting this in the wrong place and this is explained somewhere else, if so I apologize in advance. Like I said I'm trying to gain as much knowledge from you all here, and that was the first the I've noticed so far lol. Thank you all!

Wash --- Clay ---- Polish (or paint cleanser if buffer not present) --- protection

there can be subdivisions in each especially polishing which could start as abrasive as a compound, move to a polish, and then end with a finishing polish prior to waxing.
