what would be a good quantity of pads (orange, red, white, blue) for a novice to do a normal sized sedan? I think I have microfiber towels covered as I have 4 of the supreme 530s, 4 of the superplush purples for painted surfaces and the color codes microfiber detailing bulk pack.

I run with a PC . I have about 3/4 of each color of the 5.5 Buff N Shine Pads. There 6 pack on AG is a good deal. I bought the same pack last year but didn't take care off them properly so I tossed them. By some Poor Boys pad cleaner and you will be all set. Good investment that way you could get your car done in a day instead of waiting for pads to be cleaned / dry etc.

I'd say in general at least 6 if you're going to try to do it all in one day.

You could use less if you are doing just a light polish or more if you have a lot of heavy compounding to do.

2-3 would be alright if you are doing it piecemeal.

glad to hear others numbers are in line with what I was thinking. I was thinking of around four/five, especially the orange. Thanks for the answers and looking forward to hear some more.

What pads are you thinking?

I use the 5.5 LC flats on my 7424.

If you are hitting your car for the first time it is easier with 2- 6 packs----otherwise 3 orange,2 whites and a black.
A fresh pad always cuts the best. Don't forget to towel them off after every set of passes.

You can clean them quick after they get dirty, spin them out with the PC and put them on a rack to dry.

When I first placed my DA order, I got a 12 pack of 5.5" flat pads: 5 orange, 5 white and 2 black. A little while later, I felt that wasn't going to be enough, so I bought another 6-pack: 3 orange and 3 white. Now I'm confident that I have enough to do my Accord.

Here's an article from Mike Phillips on the subject: How many pads do I need to buff out my car?

Also, I think 8 quality MF towels is too few. I have 12 Gold Plush Jr's and am worried that they won't be enough for removing all the compound, polish and wax during my correction before they're all covered in product.

You are so right on the pads and microfibers.
I'm not sure how many pads or microfibers I have. Guess I must have enough

The feeling around the forum is "You can never have enough pads".

This is true. But, when not wanting to spend out the ying yang after buying your first polisher, a 6-pack of pads will be plenty.

Why? Aside from the cost as I stated above, and cleaning on the fly, there is no rule that you have to complete the entire car in one session. Do what you feel comfortable with in a day, clean & dry your pads after, and get back on it the next day.

JMO, and how I normally have to do on my Ram truck.

great to hear the recommendations. the suggestions will definitely get me going without spending a fortune. Thank you everyone
