What should I do about tearing clearcoat?

i have never (even by PPG professionals) heard of this. maybe it will work maybe it wont i dont know but my only concern is the blending of the clear with fade out thinner (reducer) will smooth the transition between new and old clear. which has (to my knowledge) 0 uv protection. but i will ask my paint rep and see what he says...maybe i have a new way to blend clear lol

im surprised you have never heard of this even by professionals. I actually learned this from a PPG instructional DVD. It is obviously not the best method but for someone who dosent want to pay up alot, this is the route taken. Im pretty sure that blending clear this way will hold up well since a PPG rep told me about it. BUT he did mention that the 100% best way of doing it is reclearing the entire panel. by now you and me know that is the way to do it. but, for those that dont want to spit out more money, this is the way i do it. Has worked very well for me.

yea never heard. i was at there training facility in CT for their 2 day waterbourne class and wasnt mentioned once lol

Man i hate water borne paint.... i guess im a solvent zombie.

whats to hate about water? dries faster, better/easier color blending. my iwata sprays it so well too

i dont know man, just dosent seem to look nicer than solvent paint. Did you see that HOK got away with it and their new shirmaline 2 is solvent based. With the low VOC's in their new line they were able to keep it solvent based.

yea. idk i started painting with water so im so used to it that i see no need to use solvent. although i plan on doing my dads 70 chevelle ss its original color that ppg can oly get in there shopline line which is weird

WHAT?! that sounds like BS man... you are gonna tell me that they can only get it in shopline and not DBC? or DBU? or Global?

seriously i might have backhand someone, and idk i'll ask them again but they only gave me a sample of the shopline. my dad wants to use house of kolor so i guess he has no problem spending them big $ lol

HOK is the **** man! great stuff. Their clears outshine the rest in my opinion. Since their clears are targeted at show cars, thats why they are extremely shiny on their own. i can just imagine how a HOK clear looks cut and buffed...

best paint ive ever used has got to be glasurit. clear lays so flat from the get go (using a sata rp)

i believe you, glasurit is top of the line paint. It sure is an arm and a leg tough! well man, WELCOME to autogeek and if you start a thread on this convo or PM, i dont want to keep hijacking this thread!

Same issue with my rear bumper. Had a shoddy repaint. Mine looks like yours but ever so slightly worse. It hasnt got any worse these past several months, or atleast so little I havnt noticed. One thing that really makes me mad is when I wash the car I can see black dirty water stuck under the clear.
