Yes, I would have to say here that prep is really the most important part, since its for a show, dont forget all the little nooks and crannies, use a small detail brush everywhere.
Prep is really closer to 90% of the look, maybe more. Make sure you wash, clay, polish, polish again, glaze (rmg, WMF, danase wet glaze) and then wax after all that.
For a show, I would recomend finishing with RMG as opposed to a wax as the last step. It will not last longer than 3 or 4 days, but the look beats even the most expensive waxes. I have heard of RMG>souv>RMG again as a show combo. Victoria concours wax is in my opinion a classier look than souveran, a teeny bit less wet but more like the high end zymols.
And dont forget to QD at the show with crystal mist, quickshine, fk425, or victoria wax QD.
