I was thinking of ordering up the Griots Garage machine polisher and their machine polish 1-4. Anyone have expierence with this system? What can I use to protect the car against winter climate. do I want to use a carnuba wax or a paint sealent? I am also open to using other brands. Give me suggestions!

The GG polished is a great choice. I have tried some of their polishes but not that particular system. For a black car with medium defects, you might consider the Meg's MF system. For protection against the winter, I would recommend Collinite 845. Even better would be to put a good sealant like Wolfgang paint sealant or Blackfire wet diamond on covered by Collinite. Good luck.

I have their polish 3, which is a fine product and will remove minor imperfections and leave a great shine. For medium swirls you will need something with more cut. Personally, for the winter I apply the sealant Duragloss 501 and the following day apply Collinite 845 wax. The protection lasts me 6 months.

Thanks. You also answered another question of mine and that was weather a wax or a sealer should be applied last.

Can you tell me what the meguires MF product is? Sorry, new to the forum and not used to all the acronyms!

Meguiars microfiber (MF) dual action (DA) correction system is awesome on the GG polisher for paint correction. It is extremely easy to use and clean up. If you want near perfect paint and a reasonable wax protection, use this system

Meguiars DA Microfiber Correction System, paint polishing system, car polish, car detailing system, compounding system, remove scratches

A Nice one step is Griots one step paint sealant. It is basically machine polish 3 mixed with their paint sealant. I have gotten pretty good longevity out of their paint sealant.

Machine polish 3 is mild. It will restore some gloss and remove some minor swirls. If you want to use theirs, machine 2 and 1 are probablyl going to be necessary. 4 is kinda useless IMO. Too mild. 3 is more aggressive and finishes down nicely.

to answer for Robert:

Lake Country makes great pads. They can be used with your GG polisher. Griots offers only 2 choices: Orange for polishing and red for waxing. LAke Country has a vast array of pad styles and levels of aggression. They are color coded. For example, yellow is very aggressive, orange is moderate and White is mild. There are literally thousands of threads on this subject.

Read this. You can pick and choose or go with a kit like the second link.

Lake Country 5.5 Inch CCS Pads 6 Pack - Your Choice!

This might be a nice start for you:

Dual Action CCS 5.5 Inch Foam Pad Kit

You will need a smaller (5 in) backing plate:

Porter Cable 7424 Backing Plates- Dual Action Hook & Loop backing plate for your porter cable 7424, The best backing plates for the Porter Cable 7424

The 5.5 in pads are easier to use and correct more efficiently than 6.5. Your Griots comes with a 6 in plate.

If I were choosing a starting point, at a minimum, I would get 1 yellow, 3 orange, 2 white, 1 gray and 1 red pad.

If you want to make it an even factor of 6 (for the 6 packs of pads) and get a good base of pads, I would go 2 yellow, 4 orange,3 white, 2 gray, 1 red.

If you want to keep it to 6, get 3 orange, 2 white and 1 red.

Yellow is only for really bad finishes or trying to reduce deep scratches (RIDS). Orange and white are the most used. It usually takes a few of them to finish a car. They get saturated and it is nice to change to a clean one. Gray would be for very mild polishes such as Menzerna PO85rd or Griots #4. Red is for wax/sealant and will typically last the whole car.

Sealant than wax both on red foam. 5.4 rec's on pads is a good starting point but I'd probaly get at least one grey/black pad for finishing polishes for a black car, IMO
2 orange, 2 white, 2 black and 2 red, I know that's more than six so you could go 1 black 1 red to start or skip the red pads and hand apply the sealant and wax but remember thin is best for lsp's.

With a DA go 5.5 inch pads for ratation issues but the GG is not too prone to that problem.

For winter in MI, Sealant of choice topped by 845 will keep you protected thru the winter. Is the car a daily driver and is it parked indoors? Blacjfire is solid, Duragloss 501/105 are good choice's as well and inexpensive. 845 is great and inexpensive as well.

Thanks for all the help guys! for a newb seeing all the options on this website is kinda overwhelming. There are so many choices its crazy!

For my grand prix (black daily driver with medium swirls) this is going to be my system im going to try out.

1. wash car
2. clay car
3. Megs DA MF correction system using their pads.
4. a coat or 2 of blackfire wet diamond using gray LC pad
5. A coat or 2 of Collinite 845 using red LC pad

Good plan? i want to do a lot of layers to really bring out a good shine!

I love the DA MF system. The second step - finishing wax (D301) - is a wax. I dont know that you need to top it with 2 more LSPs. I used it on my daughters car:

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/show-n-shine/35500-my-new-mustang-finally.html

I used the D301 as my only LSP. The car did not get driven a whole lot or washed a whole lot. I did it in April. The car sat outside most of the time. The wax was still beading well into early October. I thought that was pretty good.

About 2 weeks ago I washed, clayed and topped with Collinite 845. That wax is awesome.

If it were me, I would use both steps of DA MF and leave it at that. Then when the D301 wears off, do the Blackfire topped with 845. I do not have any experience with Blackfire, but, hear a lot of love for it on here.

AS bobble said, go super thin on those LSPs. Most can be a bear to remove if put on too thick.

OK, Meguires says that the DA MF system is for factory finishes only. something about the way the product was designed to work. well the front end of my car has been repainted because of a car deer accident earlier this year. so which other products are there for a good swirl remover that will work for me?

If you already bought the DA MF system, try it first. Apparently they had some trouble with softer repaints. The system left some micromarring in the compounding step and the finishing step couldnt clear it. Others on here have had success with it on repaints.

If not, use the LC CCS pads I linked previously with Megs Ultimate Compound and follow with Megs Ultimate Polish to finish down. Then top with your wax/sealant of choice. I recently bought Collinite 845 and love it.
