whatever happened to the mr clean system?

you know, the air dry filter gun.

i remember before i ever got into detailing i used to have this gun. and a bunch of soap and filters for it. i thought it was awesome because it really did do a good job at preventing water spots, i could wash my car in the sun, using the soap gun feature to spray directly on the panel, soak my mit with soap. do the panel, rinse the mit in a bucket, then move on to the next one. and then switch it over to the spot free rinse and push all the water off the car leaving just the "spot free" water. and it never spotted up from mineral deposits...

is there a system like this available still? i know its no 400-900 dollar filtration system but it did what it said it should do and i miss being able to do spot free rinses like that.

i know they are randomly available online, but the price seems to be a bit more than i remember it. people literally sell these filters for 30-40 a piece on ebay now..... shoulda bought the store out when they were on sale for 2 each at wm 5 years ago
 
I don't have the filters, but use the gun to pre soak all the time!

any other affordable gun type systems that will filter water as you spray? or are we stuck with those huge expensive units that mount to your garage wall or have a wheel chair to get them around?
 
lol throwback I remember using those all the time before I went to car shows when I was younger.

Some nipples, bushings, and or reducers/adapters to plumb it all in:

I used one, what I want to say was a decade ago. Don't know if they were around that long ago or not, but nonetheless I seem to recall it working quite well. They were expensive though. Can't remember too many details since I only used it once or twice a long time ago.
 
Back in the early 20's and still selling auto parts...we couldn't even give those puppies away. When I left (for retirement) in '05...we still had 10 out of the original 20 on the shelves. Even discounted down to $9.95, Mr Clean just couldn't find a new home.

Flow rate on that filter is only 1/2 gallon per hour

"Service Flow Rate: 0.5 gallons per minute"

You can run it on a hose, but it is not designed for treating that volume of water.

Not sure filter is a good option for reducing water spots when washing cars.

right but there is a difference in having a free flow of water pushing through the filter, versus the mr clean system which may have had built in flow controls in the gun. if you put too much pressure through a filter, it may not be as effective.


but from what you said, yes, the mr clean system pretty much had a super low flow rate, that might as well have been less than a half gallon per minute. but it was enough to push water off the car and replace it with the filtered water. depending on the price of a filtration system, i may just opt to use a garden sprayer with a couple gallons of distilled water and just spray over it with that to get the same effect, lol. would have been more cost effective than the mr clean system, but not as convenient.

if you can find a filter setup that provides years of filtration, then why not. you could even go the extra mile if you don't want to wait for a slow rinse off, and fill some 5 gal buckets with filtered water, then use that to rinse the car off at the end.
 
AGO sells an inline water filter which is basically the same idea but with easier to change resin. Or the DR Spotless or Griots Garage DI system if you want to drop cash.
 
I was also unable to confirm what the suggested 5yr filter actually does.

The claims are that it removes chlorine taste and decreases scale build-up

I have been unable to uncover and data on reduction in ppm of minerals in the output water.

Maybe someone else has this data.

I do not believe the 5yr filter and the resin filters use the same technology, nor do they do the same thing.

This type of "filter system" is just for the final rinse cycle:
Thus the quick disconnects.

Choose your own type of filter for your

The Mr. Clean Auto Dry System ((AD-System) specs.:

•The Mr. Clean AD-System used charcoal media to filter water (similar to a Brita water filter).

-Was the water coming out of the Mr. Clean Auto Dry System "better" than the water from a hose bib?
IMO: The answer is yes.
Was it as good as RO or DI? NO!

-Even though many people reported that The Mr. Clean AD-System was good enough to prevent leaving water spots on their vehicle...it in no way was close to being as pure as RO/DI water.

I'll go as far as to say the Watts, and similar, in-line water filter "systems" will have at least the same water quality as was provided by the Mr. Clean AD-System.

If you say they are equivalent, that's great.


I still do not see how the Watts 5yr filter is removing or adding anything that will improve the results when washing.
