What's the best way attack this?

My wife & I recently purchasd a 2006 Toyota 4Runner. It's far from perfect paint, but with some time, I think I can make it much better. One of the worst spots is this one. It's on the rear liftgate about eye high. The metal is curved, so I'm a bit nervous about trying to fix this? It's obvious that the touch up paint wasn't even the same paint code.. What are the experts thoughts on how to proceed in fixing this?

the only 100% fix would be to re spray the entire liftgate, but that would be at least $300 if you remove the gate and bring it to a shop to have painted. i would extremely lightly wetsand to level it out (2000grit or finer) and the use megs ultimate compound and polish to blend it better, i always keep in mind that a bad touch up color match always looks better than rust. (i have a 1" square on my jeep that doesnt match at all and i haven't even tried to level it out) but there is no rust and that is what is most important.
 
I'd probably try to get a better matching touch up paint, and remove what is there and start over.
 
I have some Langka Blob Eliminator that I used to remove the old, non-matching paint. It was fairly easy. I put some on a cotton cloth wrapped around the supplied card and started rubbing. In no time, the offending paint was gone.

I was left with a scratch you can feel. I am slowly filling it with the proper color touchup and reworking it with the Langka. I'm very reluctant to use any sand paper on it although that may be the fastest. If I can get it fairly smooth and topped with clear, I'll probably work it over with some 3M Perfect-It or something similar to ge it smooth. I'm in no hurry to get it perfect, just taking my time.
