What's the worst/funniest detailing mistake you've made?

Befor i knew anybetter back in highschool 8years or so ago grabbed the harbor freight special rotary and whatever pad they supplied(yellow) from the g/f's father had in the garage, applied a coat of turtlewax on my girlfriends black dodge stratus,

Having no idea's on speeds, what this pad was designed for and the fact that i had no idea what i was doing, the paint lived with swirls for the rest of it's life

till we got took the F out by a underage drunk with no lights that ran a stopsign a few weeks later, was pissed becuase i just finished repainting the doorhandles that had clearcoat failure that night

I was talking to a client after wrapping up a 2 day correction job. The roof had gathered some dust and I was explaining to him the importance of never using his california duster on the car ever again. I grabbed a bottle of ONR and misted a section to show him how to use QD safely... only it wasn't ONR it was IPA. Had to re-wax the whole roof. I'm just glad there was no marring.

The next day I marked the tops of all my chemicals so I can look at the sprayer top or the bottle to see what they are.

When I was in college I used both eagle one tire dressing and window cleaner. Both were clear and the packaging similar and when I went to wash my exterior windows it was strange, because I couldn't wipe them clean. That's when the time realized I grabbed the tire dressing and not window cleaner. Then, I couldn't get the stuff off! Luckily I had a little bit of tire and wheel cleaner left and that took it right off but I'll tell you, I panicked a little!

This past summer i got a friends IS250 to detail, the interior was never cleaned (2008 Lexus IS250), and this was in 2012...

She kept complaining about a weird smell in the interior, and me having all sorts of products i went ahead and did it...

The good thing is i found where the smell was coming from...the relation to this thread is- my mistake was reaching with my bare hand under the passenger car seat, finding old horse poo, and later an open glass jar, where the horse poo once was..

She has horses in Indiana and was going to send out the poo to get tested somewhere, but could not find the jar anywhere in her car....

It was a great experience!

a very long time ago i put a coat of

ultimate compound on my hyundai excel 91 and let it dry for 30 minutes

0.o

so then i went ahead and wiped it and it was so hard to wipe i used both of my hands and put alot of passion behind the towel

it was my first time ever to use a (scratch remover)

afterwards i learned to always (read the instructions before use)

Getting caught up in all the hype surrounding new products later than I should have. I now have a just a handful of products that will produce consistent results every time.

Giving free paint correction on a black car for a dealership. I checked it out a week later. Their lot guy had washed it a couple of times. Let's just say I had to bite my tongue to keep them as a client.

I dont think allot of peeps are gonna fess up to their mistakes, there scared of being made fun of or ruin their reputation.
One time I was rotary buffing my s2000 on the trunk with a megs black finishing pad and slightly bumped my antenna at 900 rpms. And left a gash on the antenna since its solid rubber. I just remove it now every time i work in that area

I talked to a detailer who hit an antenna with his polisher and it swung around and whipped his face. That left a nasty mark which took weeks to heal.

Dropping your clay on the floor, luckily had a new clay bar, but
Moments later dropped it again......Next Day I went and bought an auto scrub nano skin.. Worth every penny!

Only one I can think of is when I sprayed carpet cleaner on my tires in stead of tire dressing. I had two spray cans, one was armoral carpet cleaner and the other tire shine. The bottles looked the same other than the labeling. I did all 4 tires before I realized my mistake. I was totally confused as to why my tires didnt look any different... until I looked at the bottle. hahaha

After doing a custom paint job on a motorcycles gas tank, I wet sanded and started buffing it out.

I quickly discovered that I didn't strap it down good enough to my work bench. To the floor it went.

Landed right right on a curved portion leaving an awesome sized dent.

Not learning to detail the right way earlier...

Now that sucks!!

I used Megs Quick interior detailer on my tires, thinking I had the tire dressing. Noticed it after I finished, and was putting it back on the shelf, and saw the tire dressing bottle.:doh:
