Hi everyone

Looking for wheel brush recommendations to clean gloss black wheels.

Wondering if the EZ Detail brush is safe to use?

Or is it better to use something like Wheel Woolies?

Not sure if there is one that is safer to use or can minimise scratches for this particular wheel surface.

Thanks in advance.

My trail boss has high gloss black wheels and I treat them no different then the painted surfaces

I used a dedicated microfiber mitt with the contact wash...

I would go with the wheel Woolies with a lot of lubricant.

I primarily use the Mother’s Wheel brush and use that most on my painted rims. I also have the Microfiber Madness Incredibrush Flat and Wheel Mitt, which I use periodically for the back side of the rims. I usually use Meguiar’s Non-Acid Wash in an IK Foamer for cleaner or whatever wash I’m using.

I used the Daytona speed master brush on my Corvette C7 gloss black wheels, three years later they still looked fine.

for painted wheels these would be my choice that are available in the AG store...

That's what I would do too. I'd be very hesitant using any brush on gloss black wheels. In fact, I'm hesitant to use a brush on ANY nice wheel.

Are you planning to only use the brush on the inner barrel? If so both options will work. You won’t see any scratching.

For the faces a mitt would be a better option if they are gloss black.

If those gloss black wheels can survive through the Mothers Wheel Brush without scratches, then they can pretty much survive mostly anything…

It is like a flagged tipped brush, very mild. I have bronze painted wheels and I’ve seen no scratching at all. Have had that brush so many years that I have no idea when I bought it but I just bought another one for a friend and his new Accord. The new one seems just as soft.

I also use that same Mothers Wheel Brush, along with their wheel well brush. I’ve never really thought about how it compares to the flag tipped brush, but feeling them both right now side by side the Mothers brush is almost as soft as the flag tipped brush. There’s a slight noticeable difference.

My Mustang was delivered with painted gloss black wheels from the factory, which I replaced last year with Matte Black.

Ideally, you would use Wheel Woolies or a Microfiber brush for the barrels as these will limit marring. I use the Gyeon Wheel Brush or the Incredibrush Flat.

However, the lack of clearance around the front Brembo calipers on my car necessitates the use of a bristled brush. I used the red versions for a long time, although I am now using the small blue EZ Detail version.

For the wheel face and the back of the spokes, I use a small finger mitt.

DFB thanks for your pictures and post. You always do a great job of describing and visualizing that’s helpful.

Regarding the Mothers Brush I do believe it’s also a “flagged tip” brush just less dense number of bristles in the brush head.

How wide are your rear rims? Does the mini EZ brush reach the rear back edge of wheels?

The fronts are 9.5" and the rears are 10". These replaced 9.0" and 9.5".

Ideally, you would want the larger/longer EZ brush to reach all the way through. On the rears, I don't have the same caliper clearance issues as the front so the Incredibrush does it all.

The unmounted wheel looks like easy cleaning compared to the mounted wheel. You almost only need a wash mitt to clean those wheels.

My Number 1 priority with new wheels for the Mustang was easier to CLEAN! At one point, I was using all of these to do those PP1 wheels.........

They did look fabulous when freshly detailed though!

I still need a EZ brush, the Incridbrush, a boars hair brush and a wash mitt but they far less laborious to deal with.

My most favorite wheels to do are these though, plenty of clearance front and back. ......

The Immortal Brock Yates had the greatest line when he was editor of motor trend for the requirements for a good wheel:

“The best designed wheel will show as much brake disc and caliper as possible, and be able to be cleaned with one swipe of a wash mitt…”

I couldn’t agree more…The wheel directly about qualifies perfectly.
