Wheel cleaner vs Iron Remover

Have never seen an MSDS for PBMG or McKee's products.

IronX is safe on paint. Why would you expect it to be too harsh on wheels? IronX has a lower % of detergent and neutral pH relative most other wheels cleaners. I would consider using it regularly more wasteful rather than risky in terms of harshness.

Maybe too harsh on his wallet? It is costly! :p

I like McKee's foaming wheel cleaner as it cleans well. Destroys the sprayers. Well at least the last 3 sprayers I recently used.

Quoted for truth. I opened a brand new bottle today and the sprayer was already inoperable. I had to transfer it’s contents to a Meguiar’s spray bottle.

I also used McKee’s Hydro Blue Sio2 Coating on Lexus wheels. Very easy application, time will tell how it performs. (At least the sprayer worked.)

I dunno how good a wheel cleaner can possibly be but, if it came with broken sprayers 3 straight times I wouldn’t like it at all. Lol. Ok...

Packaging matters. It should be automatic, meaning the customer shouldn’t have to deal with those sort of issues. Reminds me of Gyeon and their mismatched bottle caps.

I have noticed that the foaming wheel cleaner gel eats the triggers it comes with. I transfered mine into a Griots bottle and trigger and all has been good for a while now.

I have read several posts and seen several videos where people use Iron removers on both paint and wheels, and most of them with quite a bit of success. Others recommend Iron remover on paint and a dedicated wheel cleaner. When i read up on some of the wheel cleaners, like Sonax for example, it says it goes on green and then turns purple/red like an Iron remover. On the McKee's Iron Remover reviews it's used on both paint and wheels and seems to work well. The 3D Brake Dust remover seems to get marketed as a product that will kill 2 stones with 1 product. My question is why use 2 separate products? If an Iron remover will do the job on both...why buy a separate wheel cleaner?

The question becomes is this for your personal use or customer vehicles?

I use Griot's Garage Heavy Duty Wheel cleaner and it works well with no need for Iron X if you use it on a regular basis. After just a couple weeks of washing I've tried to use Iron X after Griot's and it flat-out has nothing left to turn purple on.

When I'm detailing customer cars that are not in great shape though, I use both Griot's and then a dose of Iron X as it will cut through the embedded contaminants better.

Sorry to revive this old post, but I'd like to share my recent experience Wheel Cleaners vs Iron Removers on a honda civic sport with heavy brake dust, wheels had not been washed in over a month.

On the passenger front wheel I used Blackfire Iron remover; on the drivers side front wheel I used Eagleone All-in-one tire cleaner., which cleans the wheel but does not turn purple. I used a dedicated wheel brush on each, a soft microfiber for the face of the wheel and then pressured washed it off.

The Eagleone cleaner definitely did a better overall job of cleaning the wheel. But I wondered if there were there Iron deposits left behind?

When wheel was dry, I applied Blackfire Iron remover waited 5-min and did not get any purple bleeding from the wheel.

SO as far as this vey limited miopic experiment, Iron remover is probably much more gentle and safer to use on finicky finishes, expensive wheels, which have normal amounts of brake dust. Wheel cleaner seems to do a better overall job on heavily dusted wheels and an equal job removing iron particles.

FWIW, I use Pinnacle's 3:1 wheel cleaner concentrate and find it's very good vs say Griots Gal size pre-mix. Cost effective. I use Meg's Iron remover and again, find it works VERY well and while I think all of them are overpriced, it's a good brand and I have learned to use most everything in moderate use.
