So I'm trying to take good care of my new to me Passat and like a fool I put a bunch of scratches in one of my wheels.
I am new to detailing and thought I needed a wheel brush so I bought one but didn't realize there was a metal spine inside it. Well the metal must have poked through the fabric and now I have this:

Is there any way to fix this? It's driving me nuts. The wheels are not prefect to begin with, but the fact that I did this because I'm an idiot is absolutely driving me crazy.

Thanks for any ideas as I am clueless.

Ouch that looks bad. Most likes there isn't much you can do looks like it's down to the metal on the wheel. Some wheels have a clear coat but the way that looks it just looks to deep

Unfortunately, I think the damage is beyond repairable...

I'm sorry that happened; it really sucks but at least you'll learn from the mistake. Get these next time: Wheel Woolies Car Detailing Brushes

They are super soft and do an amazing job on even the toughest of filthy wheels.

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case. Damn. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting worse in any way?

Yeah, I threw that piece of crap away as soon as I saw what it did.

Could I sand then repaint that section? (Man that sounds like a bad idea for me to try) Or even just find some touch-up paint to at least hide it a little?

Yes you could resand, fill, primer, and paint it

Google how to repair scratched wheels.. Bunch of info on the net

Just be really careful and do your research on what you need to do the job done correctly the FIRST time (or things will really become difficult).

Yeah, I've been reading some stuff about how to fix it and I'm not sure yet if I wanna tackle that job.

I guess I'll keep reading and see what happens. Thanks for all the advice.

I'm not sure about repainting it (beyond my level of expertise) if you brought me this (I might) very lightly color san it and buff it out. The scratches would still be there but not as noticeable (maybe)

I did something similar, 'bout a year and a half ago, stupider though. I was swapping my wheels over for winter and kicked 3 of my wheels with my boots, scratching them. I used UC and it hid most of the scratches. Don't be too negative, most people have done worse.

Ok, this site rocks, thanks for all the replies.

The NASA website looks very interesting,I think I might be able to pull that off but probably as a last resort.

Being new, I don't know what color sanding is.

Also, does UC mean ultimate compound?

Just have the wheel reconditioned. There are a lot of places that do it. Make sure you use one that powder coats. I use the Wheel Collision Center in Bath PA. Wheel will come back to you better than new.

I'd go with 3M rubbing compound but by hand I doubt it'll do much

If your that new to color sanding your better off not trying it. You might do more damage.

Try a compound and see what happens, you might be surprised.. And either way you'll be following sound advice by using the "least aggressive methods to get the job done"

Well the one I have the most experience with, naturally.. That's currently a very short list.

As for aggressiveness, I'd start with a light compound and see what happens, then graduate from there up to wet sending, if necessary..but be careful with sandpaper!! If up don't know what you're doing them don't bother trying.....

Yeah color sanding can make miracles or creat nightmares. One has to really know what they are doing.
