I would go with either the ease of use of Hydro2 and reapply 2-3 times a year as necessary, or McKee's wheel coating and be set for a year. I have used both. On my own vehicles I prefer to use the coating.
With either product you should only need to use your car wash soap for cleaning. Wheel cleaners will not be necessary and will reduce the longevity of the protection.
Back in August 2013 I detailed a friend's Saturn Vue. She hadn't washed it in forever, and the wheels were filthy. I would guess that I spent at least an hour cleaning them, using IronX and wheel cleaner to remove the brake dust and rust. I then coated them with DP wheel coating.
Fast forward 2 years to August 2015, when I detailed the Vue again. Although the wheel coating had long passed it's advertised 1 year durability, the wheels were in much better condition than they were before the initial detail.

More importantly, they were much easier and quicker to clean and get back to looking like this.

That real world experience definitely showed the durability of wheel coatings.
