When to buy a polisher?

I've been lurking here for a week but this is my first post. I'm a complete newb when it comes to detailing, but I purchased a new (to me) car last week and I'd like to do my best to keep it looking sharp. I've always enjoyed keeping the interior of my car looking decent but I've never, in my 16 years of driving, applied any sort of clay/polish/wax/sealant at all. I've paid other people to do it from time to time but I'd like to try and do some of it on my own now.

So, to start with, I'm going to buy a PC7424XP or GG6" polisher. What I'm wondering is, should I wait until closer to Christmas/Boxing Week to buy one? Or do the prices of these things rarely drop?

Along with the polisher I'll need to pick up a bunch of other products of course, and I'm still working on figuring that out, but thought I would start by focusing on the big ticket item. If anyone has any suggestions for exterior product I'd love to hear it. Initially I just want something that's easy to apply in a stage or two and looks sharp. If I get good at working the machine I will expand into more advanced product.

The car I'm working on is a White 2008 VW GLI with only 32,000kms. It's so new to me that I've yet to even wash it for the first time but it's in real good shape. I can definitely see some swirl marks and minor scratches to get out but overall there isn't anything major I need to fix up. It's my daily driver, lives in an underground parking lot at home and spends 8-9 hours a day parked outside while at work. I live in Vancouver, BC so it will see lots of rain over the next 4-5 months. Here's a quick pic from the night I brought it home.

Thanks for any suggestions, primarily on when to buy the polisher, but also on anything else you're willing to chime in on!:xyxthumbs:

As soon as possible. :D It's good to have a DA if you are serious in detailing. You can use it in correcting, polishing, finishing, cleaning, sealing and waxing the paint, and in cleaning the carpet too.

Welcome to the site. Nice looking ride. Polishers are normally excluded from the sales but from time to time AG offers an everything on sale sale. I'd suggest joining the VIP club and also checking out the regular membership discount. They can be viewed in the two stickies on this page Discounts and Specials - Auto Geek Online Auto Detailing Forum

I would suggest this kit Meguiars G110v2 Ultra Polish Kit with 5.5 Inch Pads FREE BONUS
Also add this backing plate to your order lake country 5 inch backing plate, 5 inch backin plate, 5 inch hook and loop backing plate because the one that comes with the polisher is junk and may or may not last through your learning curve. This is a good polisher but more importantly I am recommending the M-105 and M-205 compound and polish so if you prefer the Griot's Garage or Porter Cable polisher I'd still get these 2 Meguiars products with it though I don't see a GG kit with the Meg's twins in it. Stick around and learn some and enjoy your stay.

P.S. I highly recommend buying a copy of Mike Phillips' new book as it will explain in depth what to do with your car and why.

If VW white paint is as hard as Audi white paint - definitely need M105

This is my first VW so I'm not too sure but I would guess they must be a little similar. A lot of other parts are shared between the companies, why not a little paint too.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Being up in Canada I unfortunately miss out on the stuff like free shipping today. Getting the Meguiars kit suggested to me would cost $40! I've been obsessing over the store here (and on a few other sites) hoping for some sort of deal on the polishers but no such luck so far. I've signed up for the VIP already and for the regular mailing list, I'm just so impatient with these things that I want to buy one NOW!!

As for the Meguiars 105 and 205 suggested, I've seen lots discussed about them yeah. I've been referencing the Swirl Remover chart here and was hoping to stay away from any of the abrasive stuff early on. Is it safe enough to use the 105 with one of the DA units even as a newb?

Buy 1 Now they have plenty of good package deals. 1 cyclo deal is 22% off.1 pc deal is 28% off and there are other deals on polishers . its better to get as a package than just a polisher, you're getting the other stuff anyway.
