Which Brand 3" Backing Plate?

Throughout the dozens upon dozens of LC pads I've used over the span of about 10+ years, I've never had a problem with them providing support in the rare instance there has been a problem. LC, specifically Eric, has always answered any and all of my questions and/or addressed any of my concerns in a quick and professional manner.

I can't see a world where someone melts down a pad, much less a backing plate and it NOT be user error! :rolleyes:

I mean, HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU NOT NOTICE WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!?! :dunno:
 
I got some of my pads in. I ordered a Meg's soft buff polishing pad, soft buff 2.0 finishing pad, and a couple 7.5" Chemical Guys hex-logic pads. I have some 5.5" Lake Country pads and a 5" backing plate on the way. I haven't used the polisher yet since I prefer not to get hypothermia, but I did place the pads on the backing plate, and it seems like the hex-logic pads actually stick to the Meg's backing plate better than the Meg's pads. So far I only have the 6" backing plate that came with the G110V2. That's not to say the Meg's pads didn't hold well, but they were much easier to remove.

I agree. When I use LC plates, the velcro really grabs on my Megs pads like theres no tomorrow, I have to literally peel them off. On the other hand my Meguiar's BP's make it so easy to remove my Meguiars pads. Not really a huge advantage, but it does make it easy for me to swap pads literally on the fly.
 
For what it's worth, the one I like is not available stand alone but only with the Griot's Garage 3" Mini Polisher.

It's thin and compact in size like the 3M and Meguiar's 3" backing plates but the 5/16" threaded stud is permanently built into the backing plate.

With the Meguiar's and 3M versions you attach a universal fit stud into the backing plate. Not a bad thing but make sure you tighten it down and check it once in a while.

At least we don't carry a replacement but maybe Griot's offers one?

The Lake Country is very heavy duty, more heavy duty than needed for a Griot's polisher but perfect when using it with a full size polisher.


For what it's worth... if I had a list of the top 10 tools I like to have on hand for detailing cars, the Griot's 3" Mini Polisher is one of them for,

  • Machine sanding
  • Machine applying wax

Sorry to dig up an old thread... But what is the PC Guard, and where can it be found? Swapping to a 3" backing plate as we speak.
 
Will these 3" plates fit the harbor freight DA ?

Will these pads be hard to control due to less surface area than my regular 6" pads?

I can probably take a cheap 5" plate and use a router to whittle it down to 3".
 
Before I started buying Lake Country pads from Auto Geeks.net I mainly used the 3M system which is available in my local stores, used by body shops. I have found the LC pads to be of very high quality and the only ones that I use now. The Hydro flat, CSS and Hybrid are excellent. They work well on my old 3M Hook It rotary back up pads at 1100 RPM as well as my Flex 3401.
 
3M Clean Sanding 3 inch Disc Backing Plate Kit - 20427 I don't own this backing pad but I have all of the others and they are very long lasting. I've just replaced one that was several years old. Just go to shop by brands and click on 3M at AG.net. It appears to be universal fit.
